PSE&G Needs to change my gas meter archived

Did anyone else get the automated call that PSE&G needs to gain access to your house so they can change out the gas meter?

I'm happy to schedule it. I called the number they left and the recording tells me they are experiencing a "high call volume" and to call back unless I smell gas...

Try again the next day...same message.

So I'm done. If they want to change the meter, they can call me back.

I agree with you.

However one of the down sides to this is that they own the meter. They could start billing you on estimated readings which I hate because you either over pay or under pay.

Is the meter leaking gas?

You may want to take a spray bottle and fill it with a solution of soap and water and test your connections. Spray the solution on the connections/joints and see if you get any bubbling. If you do you have a leak and you know where it is!

Just thinking of your safety!

They periodically have to replace the meters by law, I wouldn't worry about it being a hazard. They replaced ours last year because it was due to be replaced.

I know both our water and gas meters have been replaced in the years we've lived here for routine maintenance (gas) and new technology (water). It was annoying, but they eventually scheduled it at a convenient time. As someone said, they own the meters, so you have to comply, but they have to find a convenient time for you if they are coming in to your house to do the work.

So you do not panic I provide the following.

This notice to change the gas meter is NOT any indication of a problem or a possible gas leak. Nor will it cause your meter to be estimated any more than it is today.

Your gas meter is a certified measurement device and public law requires that it be accurate since it is used for billing purposes.

The law requires that the gas company replace any gas meters that may be malfunctioning in terms of measurement. The law also requires that a certain percentage of installed meter be replaced with newly certified meters each year. I was told once that the selection of the exchange meters is a combination of oldest installed and a mix of random selection of the installed base.

The notice you received is nothing more than a scheduled meter exchange. If you fail to connect, others will and when the quota is reached the gas company will be done. Your meter will go back into the selection pool for another exchange cycle.

Enjoy,
Later,
George
