PSA - Pet killed by car tonight

Tonight a beautiful DSH Tabby cat was struck and killed by a vehicle on Ridgewood Rd, between New England Road and Cedar Lane. We have moved the cat from the center of the road and placed it on the berm. My sincere condolences to the family that has lost their pet.

did you notify PD/animal control?  they can attempt to scan for microchip/contact the owner or the owner may call them.  you can also post on the Neighbors by Ring app.  Are you sure it was a pet (ie did it have a collar)?  or could it have been a feral?

I did not notify Animal Control.  The owner of the house where we moved the cat to the berm will notify animal control tomorrow if no one claims the cat. Trust me - it is not a feral.  Your point about having a vet scan for a chip is a good one. Unfortunately I don’t possess either the heart or stomach to move the poor kitty from where it is to a vet who can scan for a chip.

Thank you for moving the cat. That's tough but a good deed for the owners.

animal control/PD should be able to scan it when they pick it up...PD should be notified right away-hopefully they will store it or the owner may contact PD looking...by morning wild animals may take it away or make the scene worse.

When St. Hubert's is called (SOMAs ACO) they will relay the info to anyone who is missing a cat. I have 2 ferals and one went missing recently so I reported it to them, sent them a picture and asked if any cat had been picked up injured or deceased in South Orange. They had recorded one in Maplewood and I was able to obtain a description. My feral returned after I handed out pics to the neighbors and asked everyone to check their garages.

What color was the kitty. I'm on quite a few sites on FB that often post lost cats.

The poor kitty is a tiger cat.  It is still on the berm.  I will call St. Huberts.

I just got off the phone with St. Huberts answering service.  The service told me they do not cover Maplewood. I left a message anyway.

you’ve done all you can and probably more than most would. Sad but short of disposing of the body yourself which I could not do, You’ve done enough.

St. Hubert's is Maplewood's ACO. Has been for a few years. Is the cat still there? I'll call and also I'll call the Maplewood Health Dept.

As a rescue, I worked with a few friends to get St. Hubert's after South Orange closed the shelter. So sorry you were given misinformation.

I cannot believe the service told you that St. Hubert's does not cover Maplewood.  The town has a contract with St. Hubert's, and it is not inexpensive.  Thank you for your care and concern for this poor cat.

@Sweetsnuggles - thank you for moving the deceased cat to a safer location and trying to locate its owners. It cannot have been easy.  You are a kind and thoughtful person.

St. Hubert’s did not return my call. I tried to tell the person who answered the phone and took my message that Maplewood was within their service area.  I drove by the location tonight. Thankfully, the kitty is no longer on the berm.   When I talked with MPD yesterday, they told me to call DPW.  I didn’t do that because I wanted to give the owners time to retrieve the kitty.

When I phoned St. Huberts to report a partially eaten medium sized dead animal on my property. They told me they do not remove dead animals and suggested I call DPW.  DPW will remove dead animals from the berm.  They do not go on privately owned property.

I recently spoke to Annie Feddeman one of the dispatchers of the ACOs. Very gracious and enthusiastic. They no longer leave from the Madison building so best during daytime hours to emphasize that you need an ACO. She has been with St. Hubert's for years and is very excited about their TNR efforts. If you see a feral and wish to help it, call SHs to trap, neuter and release to you. I'm all for helping people to set up small shelters with straw, never hay.

Her email is afeddeman@sthuberts.org.

I'm thinking it might be helpful to do a St. Hubert's thread but many MOLers don't go to Pets and Animals but what the heck.

Not only was the service incorrect that St. Hubert's doesn't covered Maplewood, it is so helpful to let them know by email and perhaps photo or description if a dead cat or dog is found.  If your pet is missing, please let them know and send a picture.

I'll start another thread but for the time being here is a start.

St. Hubert’s Animal Control Officers are on duty 365 days a year, 24 hours a day.

We provide local animal control and rescue services to those residing, or experiencing a lost or found pet, in the following municipalities:

Madison Shelter (973-377-2295) serves the following: Borough of Madison, Maplewood, Netcong Borough, Township of South Orange Village, Irvington, Hillside, Florham Park, and Watchung.

North Branch Shelter (908-526-3330) serves the following: South Bound Brook, Branchburg Township, Somerville, Alexandria Township, Frenchtown Borough, City of Lambertville, Hampton Borough, Holland Township, High Bridge Borough, West Amwell Township and Milford Borough.

Stray animals must be housed in the facility designated by the municipality in which they are found. By state law, stray or lost pets must be sheltered for a period of seven days before they can be offered for adoption.

This is all so sad to have someone's pet just lying there. I will confess to disposing of a number of presumably stray cats; sometimes not in the most dignified manner, but I prefer cremation to burial, and Essex County has an incinerator.
