This type of scam is very common when selling on Craigslist:
They send you a fake check worth more money than the asking price. Your bank clears it at first. Then the scammer asks you to send them the overage money back (usually a couple hundred bucks via western union).
Then the bank tells you the check was a fake, and you owe the bank money for the fraud. And then you're out even more.

Just want to give everyone a heads up abut a possible scammer on the MOL classifieds. I have 2 items for sale and was contacted by a "Jones Simmon" who agreed to the price but after telling him I wanted cash or CC, he wanted to send me a certified check. I reiterated that it was cash or CC only and had to be picked up in the Maplewood area due to size and weight of what I was selling. His response directly from his e-mail: "i wished i could pay you with cash but due to family emergency, am out of town and i can only instruct my bank to issue you a certified check and once the check cleared, we can arrange for the pick up. if you are okay with this, kindly get back with your name and mailing address tomail you the payment."
Told him forget it, scam someone else.
