Plumber recommendation/ rates question archived

I had a plumber come and "snake" out my laundry drain and Mr. Lara thinks I paid waaay too much. The company was called "Mr. Rooter" and the charge was $300. Do you think I can get this done cheaper?

Thanks for any input!!!
Over a 15 year period we have used many plumbers in MW. Most were rcommended and after2 incidents of unreasonable pricing we identified another licensed plumber who was high but not out of control and he was "our plumber" for 8 years. Unfortunately, there was always an edge and answers/parts were often an issue e.g. fixing a shower became " I don't have the part I'll have to come back...." About three years ago a friend clued us in to Maplewood Sewer and Drain / Ronnie. We have had the plumbing issues that one encounters with an 80 year old house. Ronnie has consistently provided excellent service in a timely manner at a reasonable price. He willingly explains the problem and usually has the necessary parts. Mr. Lara is probably right.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely give him a shot. We also have a really old house--built in 1923 as are most of the houses on our street. It's great in so many ways but in other ways,, it blows!

Lara, We have been very pleased with the service we have received from Gateway. They advertise on this site, I think.

AK

Just had our drain snaked too.
Our plumber is the best. Fair prices, fast response time and parts always on hand.
Coraggio Brothers Plumbing & Heating Co Inc

For general plumbing problems, Coraggio is wonderful. They do not do renovations, preferring to do routine maintenance and smaller jobs, so they are generally available on very short notice and do not get "distracted" by a large renovation job elsewhere. They are scrupulously honest--once I called them in to replace a toilet, they took a look, fixed one small thing, and charged me very little. They could have charged a lot and replaced the whole thing--heck, that was what I said to do--but they told me it was not necessary.

I have also heard similar stories about Ronnie but have no personal experience with him.

masters4, may i ask what they charged to snake your drain? did i get ripped off at $300?

Another shout out for Corragio Brothers...they are always quick to respond, neat in their work, fairly priced and as mfpark says, scrupulously honest!!

We used Gateway and CT Williams. My understanding is that Ronnie is not a licensed plumber but can do drain cleaning and stufft like that.

We have used Joe and Kevin Corraggio for years and have always been happy with their work and their response time. Good guys.

lara - you're probably tearing your hair out right now, as none of us seem to be answering your question about whether your got ripped off or not....I've had our drains snaked by both Ronnie and Gateway, and I can't remember how much they charged. The job Ronnie did was much smaller than the one Gateway did, and I'll have to look when I get home at what the charge was, as I don't have those receipts with me.

Here's a fourth or fifth for the Corraggio boys. Always come when they say; honest; careful and although not a "discount" plumber, you always get what you pay for. While they may not do "big" renovations, they did change pipes around and installed a new sink in our basement laundry room. Since my husband was doing much of the prep work prior to this, they accommadated him and worked in two shifts without charging more. Highly recommend them. Haven't met Kevin, but Joe is quite cute as well (not that that matters :winkoh oh.

Yes lara, sorry. I have no idea whether that charge is too high. It sounds like it but the last time we needed something snaked out that we couldn't do ourselves was so long ago that I can't remember.

haha....It's ok...at least I am getting some good recommendations!

$300 is high for a simple snake-out. $150 would be more what I would expect. But if they had to hunt down the line to find the block, or if it was a particularly nasty block that took a long time to route out, that could make it higher than what you would normally expect.
