Please ID this bird

Long needle-like beak. Distinct brown squares on back of neck. Smaller than duck, bigger than pigeon. Been siting on grass in yard for a long time eating.

Woodcock. They were migrating and adversely affected by last week's storm. Places like the Raptor Trust are attempting to nurse them back to health.

Nice. I called animal control. hopefully they will bring it to the Trust. If Animal Control can get it in a box and covered, I'd be willing to drive it there myself.

Also known as the timberdoodle, they have a unique dance.

When we (animal control, me, wife, another town work guy) approached bushes where it was, it flew off like a rocket. A relief, since its presence on the ground for hours led us to believe it was injured. Hopefully it will find a warm place somewhere.

Thanks again for I.D.

Unique? I don't think so. I remember a lot of guys doing that dance at my senior prom in 85.

Also of note - this is da boid dat da cooker spaniel is named for.

That funky back and forth "hey baby" thing had us worried too. Funny.
