My 15 my 15 pound dog ate a lot of fudge. I'm assuming I should rush her to the vet. Can a calm headed person who has experienced tell me exactly what to do and where I can take her please.

Thank you tjohn, we are on our way there now.

Westfield is excellent. Milk chocolate not as toxic as dark chocolate. Good luck.

She is going to be fine. They will keep her until tomorrow for observation. And it wasn't close to how expensive I thought it would be. Thanks again tjohn, and Joan and Cody for your concern!

Good to hear..especially the part that she is gonna be fine. The less expensive than you thought part isn't bad either.

Good to hear that she'll be OK! When our dog had a medical emergency at 4 a.m. of the morning of Christmas Eve day, I called Westfield and it was so reassuring to have someone say bring him in right now. They took care of the problem, at a very reasonable price, our vet was in agreement with what they did and what was prescribed and we were so relieved.

Glad your experience was good, too! (Just reminding you and anyone else who reads this that xylitol is even more toxic to dogs than dark chocolate and it is in so many snacks and even dental floss now that many dogs are getting into trouble because of it - another thing dog owners have to worry about!)

phew, happy to hear she's ok. worrisome with a little dog!

So glad your dog is ok. Yes, Westfield Vet for off hour emergencies. We were also there once on Christmas Eve day! Also, raisins are the worse.

The key is knowing how much actual chocolate was eaten by weight.  For example, a pound of fudge might weigh 16 oz, but the amount of cocoa in there is not 16 ounces.  When my 60 lb dog got a bar of bakers chocolate I did the math, and the amount eaten was still well below the toxic level.  And that was straight chocolate.

I've seen people freak out because their dog ate a few crumbs off the floor from a chocolate cake.  Literally crumbs, and by weight most of a chocolate cake will be flour, eggs, and sugar, the amount of cocoa in a cake is small.  Once you get down to crumbs, well, I don't care if its a teacup Chihuahua that licked up less than half a teaspoon of cake crumbs, they're not going to die.  Chocolate is toxic to dogs, but the dose DOES matter, it isn't cyanide.

The "chocolate toxicity calculator" tool  here    https://www.merckvetmanual.com/toxicology/food-hazards/chocolate  is useful.

I should  make a correction, my dog ate a whole bunch of chocolate brownies, not fudge. It was fudge I imagine the resolution would not have been as happy.

When we take our children to the doctor I often remind them how privileged we are to have access to such wonderful healthcare. Now I am reminded as to how privileged I am to have access to such wonderful health care - for my pet! I do not take any of this for granted. As I also do not take for granted the wonderful network we have here on MOL. Thank you all!

How's your dog doing?

Westfield is our regular vet practice. We love them.

My sweetie pie is doing great, thanks!

Our 100lb rottie got into raisins once. I don’t even recall how much she ate, it wasn’t even that much but because they’re dried they’re super concentrated. The resulting GI havoc while it worked its way through her system was enough for my mom to make sure to keep them out of reach from then on AND kept the dog from ever wanting to eat them again
