The ordeal began around 2 p.m. when the vehicle was stolen from outside a
CVS on Valley Street while the baby’s mother was in the store,
how can someone leave a child in the car with the engine running on valley st and go into cvs? Boggles my mind. Negligence.

Not to excuse the car thief but, as someone who raised two small children in MAPSO, I cannot imagine doing this. Shocking!
it was originally reported that she was held up at knifepoint. Any idea how that story got initiated?

I was wondering the same thing.

patch initial report was she was in the parking lot and a man carjacked her. I was waiting to see who, and how it was going to be posted on MOL.
It’s impressive the police response was so swift that they saw him on Irvington avenue.
the article didn't say if the car was running or if there was a fob inside...in this case, all we know was a baby was left unattended. this...and the other situations...happen so often its ridiculous......there is a serious lack of personal responsibility and common sense.
maybe she lied at 1st because she knew she could be in legal trouble for leaving the kid.....or maybe the star ledger got it wrong.....wouldn't be the 1st time the news was wrong.
Should the driver (parent or otherwise) be charged with child endangerment?
It seems the parents are NEVER charged....sure they have been punished by the fear of the child being missing, but they need to have a criminal record of child neglect....to keep them from being hired in any care taking capacity ...and to be used against them if there is another incident of negligence.
this behavior is too common, people have been taught they do not need to be responsible for themselves or their children/pets....1st conviction should be a suspended sentence, no removal of the child from the home unless there is other evidence of ongoing danger in the home...
in the time before key fobs, there was a big problem with cars in upper middle class areas being stolen.....because the parents thought it was safe to leave the car running in the driveway to warm up before the kids came out....and the thieves knew it....so they were wait in neighborhoods just before school.
..or maybe appropriate punishment for 1st time offenders would be community service...the offending parent could go to child birth or mommy and me classes and tell her story to educate people....

This is still a big problem. Most of the cars stolen in Maplewood are running and/or have the key/fob in the car. And most of the cars that have items stolen from them are unlocked.
Every post so far blaming the victim..typical MOL..
She made a horrific mistake. Thank god everyone is safe and the piece of trash arrested.

I didn't blame the victim. I had read in the Village Green that she was carjacked at knifepoint. To me that's much more worrisome than leaving the car running while you're inside a store. Maybe that's just me though.

yes, you were actually looking for answers but read all the comments above where she should be charged with Negligence, be punished etc etc. a lot of hate for a victim. Really awful.

hate? Really? It’s negligence. Aren’t you one of the biggest supporters of holding people responsible for their actions?

yes and hopefully the **** who stole the car and the Baby pays the price. Praying the mom can someday forgive herself.
Years ago, when my neighbor's kids were small, their babysitter left them in a running car in the driveway with the windows open. She was in the house talking to her mother on phone. I confronted her and she actually got testy with me.

I had a similar experience when I parked next to a car with sleeping kids inside outside of a store. I went in and said something to the parent (?) who told me to mind my own business.
There was a story years ago about a woman who left her child in a car in the parking lot of a Mall while she went to her job at the Mall. There was a lot of public reaction supporting the woman for working rather than being on Welfare!!!
Just found the original story:
I just googled and found numerous stories of kids dying after being left in cars by accident.

do you see anyone here saying the thief should not be punished? You focus on the piece of **** that stole the car because that’s what gets your adrenaline going. Typical.

The guy was a total dirtbag (IMO) but he was an opportunist. I have been so tempted just to move people's cars a few blocks away if I walk by when they leave them running in front of an establishment, but I don't want to get arrested.

You’ve said plenty of Ridiculous things here on this thread I think you should take a break.
the point about Livingston, is that it happens in the best areas....the thieves know where to target...you're not safe even in that gated section of west orange......people need to be responsible for themselves in all neighborhoods.
no it is NOT awful to demand that irresponsible parents be held accountable..it wasn't an 'accident' or 'innocent mistake' it was willful negligence...it happens to much and time and time again other parents see there is no consequence for the offending parent...and have nothing to motivate them to think about what they are doing
what if this parent got a job at day care, and left the kids in the day care van?
people graduate from high school knowing chemistry and shakespeare, but have no life skills...a couple years later 99% of what they learned in high school is forgotten and useless....education needs to become more relevant.
my neighbor raised his daughter on his own.....mom had visitation. mom was working at a mall, and rather than ask dad to keep the daughter, picked up the daughter and left her locked in the car in the mall parking lot (she was 5). girl told dad.....dad got her a cell phone and started following her on visitation to make sure she was okay....This mother did have an option.
maybe if all parents to be had to watch the movie Adam (Walsh) to get a parenting certificate..make it a requirement to graduate high school. that is another thing i witness numerous times per year...once a target manager brought a kid back to the parents, told them to watch him, as soon as the manager walked away, the kid wandered off.....in the thrift store, parents regularly leave kids in the toy aisle while they shop (and let them trash it). There was a kid kidnapped from the elizabeth store (a toddler I think)......and an 8 year old killed because she was allowed to use a clothing store as a play ground and had a fatal accident....but it keeps happening...

ridiculous things…. There’s a term for the condition you suffer with…
The car thief was arrested. The baby is safe. The mother maybe learned her lesson. Maybe. You leave your car running on a main road and go into a store, then have both towns police departments racing through residential neighborhoods to catch the thief. One single stupid act by one inconsiderate person could have turned out more tragic. Maybe that’s why some of us are very disturbed by this incident.
There are people who walk or drive around looking for an opportunity to see stupid people doing stupid things. Sadly that’s the world we live in.

let it go. The victim and her baby are safe and sound. She obviously learned a lesson of epic proportions. Your continued condemnation of the woman is sadly starting to sound like victim shaming. Yes, don’t leave your children in a car ever. Don’t do it. She got the message. If you feel you need to continue going onto social media to discuss what happened that is OK, you just really need to stop shaming the victim. That would be the polite thing to do. Hopefully, moving forward you’ll keep that in mind.

I don’t need you to tell me when to start or stop. I really don’t. You are the one who came on here accusing everyone of blaming the victim. I’m just trying to show you why some of us feel that way. Now you can carry on with your madness. Turning this into victim shaming.
what if it turns out there was two different stories published about what happened because the victim lied to police? Should we just ignore it in fear of you being the asshat and telling us when to stop or go?
