well, I'll be damned.

I went to look up the name of the tabla player I saw in Binghamton, NY in 1977, playing with John McLaughlin's group Shakti (amazing seats, front row, and they were playing on a stage about a foot high, not 15 feet from us. most intense concert of my life - practically had an orgasm.) and lo and behold, who is it, but Zakir Hussain.

Maybe not best ever, but David Jones the drummer also plays really great tabla and does amazing improvs on devotional themes that emerge from Buddhist meditations
