PhD student researching Maplewood Online and 9/11 – looking for interviewees

Hi MOLers,

My name is Franny Corry and I’m a PhD student in communication at the University of Southern California. This summer I’m interviewing MOL members for a paper I am writing about how MOL has been used locally to reflect on, memorialize, remember, and communicate about 9/11.

I am posting here to introduce myself (hi!) and to find members who would be willing to have an interview with me. This project hopes to expand knowledge about the importance of local online sites like MOL, and distinguish the effects of this global event that was so local, and deeply felt, in places like Maplewood.

I have been in touch with MOLers who have participated on threads about 9/11, and so appreciate the perspectives of those I’ve talked to so far. I am looking for more members who would be willing to talk with me in July while I am in town, at a time and location of your choosing. I am hoping to speak with anyone who:

- has read posts about 9/11 on MOL in the past (for example: https://maplewood.worldwebs.co... ; https://maplewood.worldwebs.co...);

- has posted in one of these threads;

- was reading or posting on MOL around September 2001

No recollection or experience is too small – often people have more to say than they think! Please message me on MOL if you have questions or are willing to be interviewed. I can also be emailed at corry@usc.edu

Hope to get to know more of you soon.

Had an interview with Franny during the week at Village Coffee.   Pleasant experience.  I recommend

Hi Maplewood Online!

Some of you saw my thread I posted here earlier this summer. I want to reach out again to any MOLers I couldn’t reach the first time who are willing to chat with me about their experiences of 9/11 and how they have used MOL in relation to 9/11– whether around September 2001, for sharing memories of 9/11, or simply reading others’ posts about 9/11 (see my first post for a full explanation of my project!)

I spent July in Maplewood/South Orange interviewing MOL members to hear their experiences on 9/11 and the way they used MOL as an online platform. MOL members (confidentially) shared with me important, memorable and deeply touching experiences. It is apparent from these interviews that MOL is an important online gathering place, whether for sharing memories of 9/11 or just exchanging info about what’s going on in the area.

I’ve now returned to the west coast for the school year, but thought I would see if anyone is willing to be interviewed remotely, via Skype, over the phone, or even over email. Feel free to message me on MOL or email me at corry@usc.edu if you are willing to chat. All insights, even if you don’t think you have much to say, are important.

I also realize it’s a few days before September 11th, so I am thinking of the South Orange/Maplewood and MOL communities, and feeling especially grateful to those who shared their experiences.

Thanks again and hope you’re all well –

Franny

Good luck with your project, Franny. I enjoyed meeting you and participating in your interview.

I never saw the original post, but I was on MOL at work when the planes hit.  I remember reading about it in my cubical on MOL and then going to the window to see (we were in Jersey with a view of the towers).  Anyway, I have a bad memory, but MOL was a big part of my 9-11 experience.  I'd be glad to talk to you.
