Pets and the Fourth of July

Please remember to keep your pets (including indoor/outdoor cats) inside, safe and secure over the long weekend. Because there will be so many people celebrating, with their own bootleg fireworks, it is probably a good idea to start keeping them mostly inside starting Friday.

Patricia McConnell has a great article on sound sensitive dogs and keeping them safe, here http://www.icontact-archive.com/RQ3H7sM5zspOXV9RF2LcVGlryQN64M5_?w=3

Thanks for starting this thread again, Calli.

The fireworks display at our local fair grounds (about a mile away from the new house) was this past Sunday night. And this is the first time I've seen our cats react. I guess it was the first time we were close enough for them to feel the repercussions of the explosions, and they were distinctly jumpy.

Love the photo.

Bumping this up, so true

More pets go missing over the Fourth of July weekend than any other time of year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Many seasoned animal lovers know to keep their dogs inside, but many pets are still running away or getting killed by cars as they bolt blindly from the noise.

Thank you for sharing this. Last night we heard some fireworks and my little dog was not happy. I'm going to suggest we keep her in a room with the door closed, fan on, and some music.

Town fireworks are across the street from me. It literally freaks my dogs out. So every year, around dusk, I put the 'kids' in the car and drive out Rt 80 to the Delaware Water Gap, turn around, stop for ice cream and come home.

I get to see the flashes of colors as I drive and dogs stay quiet, content and safe...

Nice approach, MsSumida!

Thanks Calli. My poodles are freaking out. Going to read the articles now. May be too late to help now, but at least I can try tomorrow night.

Last night (when the fools in the back put on a pre-show worthy of the Grucci family) I had a pacing dog and 2 dematerializing cats. Please gather up your pets, keep them indoors today, make sure all of them have an ID tag on and keep them safe. Have a happy and healthy 4th.

Should have realized the idiots who live behind you would do something like that for the 4th. Hope the animals all still have their wits and their hearing today!

I'm just down the hill from Rock Spring Country Club. The noise was echoing off of all the hills. I hope tonight's will be a little less loud since they will be farther away.

Not a loud fireworks fan here, either. I usually spend that evening in the basement, with the TV on and a dog draped over my lap. At least the mosquitoes don't get me in the basement!

Apparently our new town has some residents who like their fireworks noisy. Although fireworks (beyond sparklers) are illegal in the state, ash cans were booming away in the near distance on and off all day. I hate that shyte. And the poor cats... This is the first year I've seen them react to fireworks noise, but they have recovered now. Lots of twitchy ears and hunched shoulders. And that was just me.

I hope tonight isn't awful.

I can't even enjoy my beautiful yard early in the evening because they have been shooting things off all day. LOL they just shot off a few roman candles and I'm sure the show will begin in a few minutes. I haven't seen a cat in a couple of hours----and Gracie has put herself in her crate. The windows are closed, the A/C on, and even though I am noise sensitive, and I can only hear half as well as I did last year, it is very disconcerting because it is so random. My poor babies, their hear is so much more acute than mine.

Good luck Calli, this is the only time ever, I am thankful I have no pets, but only since June

Yes, the randomness is what kills me, too. I hate very few things more than sudden, loud noises. And then there's the anticipation, when you know more is coming but don't know when.

I got really lucky last night. Apparently, the loud stuff that people enjoy letting off at their own homes was a daytime activity. But at 9 p.m. I learned that our neighboring town (Marlborough, I'd guess, or maybe Hampton) has a 4th of July fireworks display over a big lake that's over that way. And I had a clear view of all of it above the trees from all of our front windows. In fact, I think next year I will pull the Weber Kettle around to the driveway with some lawn chairs and just park with the grill and marshmallows from 9 to 9:30 for the show!

Hardly any noise and LOTS of pretty lights.

So, how did everyone's pets fare last night? Did it go well? Any survivors?
