Parking Stickers for Residential Streets? archived

My realtor mentioned something to me about needing parking stickers to park on our street in front of our house here in Maplewood. Is that true? If so, where can I get them. Are they only needed during certain hours or days? I tried Googling but couldn't find much about it. I have guests coming and don't want them to get a ticket. Thanks.
Some streets have parking restrictions during certain times on weekdays. For example, we live a couple of blocks from a school, and there are some hours in the morning and the afternoon where parking is not allowed. However, with a residential sticker, the limitations don't apply.

I do not know the rule if your street has permit parking restrictions in the morning, to keep the spaces open for commuters who purchase permits. However, the best thing to do would be to ask at the Municipal Building.

I would look at the street in front of your house, for any signs indicating any parking limitations. Most of the time-based limitations (as opposed to "No Parking Any Time") wouldn't matter on the weekend, or in the late afternoon and evening

You can get resident parking stickers to park by your house from the Town Clerk area at Maplewood Town Hall. They are free, and you'll need to have your driver's license and registration for the car you are registering with you (I tried to do it for my car and my husband's but didn't have his registration - no go). With the sticker you can have your car parker on the street during hours that it might be restricted or limited. Really handy if you are having work done on your house and the contractors need to be in the driveway.

eta: these stickers do NOT make it ok to park on your parking-restricted street overnight. For that, you have to call the Police Dept. and let them know that you will have to be on the street for that night. If you don't have a garage and will always have to park on the street overnight, that's a different situation than the one I'm describing here.

Do you have a driveway? If so, the general rule in Maplewood is no parking on the streets overnight. If, on a temporary basis, you need to park in the street, call the Police Department for permission to park without getting a ticket.

In a few areas many of the houses do not have driveways and cars must park on the street. I'm not an expert on the rules for this, but you will need to contact either the police department or town hall to get information on how to register for this and whether permission extends to guests.

You do need a parking permit to park on your street overnight, 2a-6a. It costs $210 or $105 after July 1st. http://www.twp.maplewood.nj.us/index.aspx?NID=90

Funny, I've been paying $240 a year for my overnight permit.

ETA: I checked out the link, that information is not for overnight permits, it is for daytime commuting permits.

Call the MPD non-emergency number, give them your address, and they'll tell you what to do. Temp parking for guests does not carry a charge.

If you live where the parking permit is required, you get it for free. Town Hall can direct you how to get them. You have to get one every year.

Thank you, consensus seems to be that I will inevitably need a permit, at least for guests, so I will contact town hall to clarify exactly what I'll need for my street.

No, you do not need a permit for guests. If you have an overnight guest you call in to the PD (973-762-3400) and ask for permission and they will take down the type of car and the license plate number. You MUST call before 2am, and they will not grant permission during weather emergencies (snow, hurricanes, etc). On occasion you will call in a car and it will still get a ticket. If this happens you call the violations department in the morning (the phone number on the back of the ticket) and explain that you were on the list and were issued a ticket by accident. After they confirm that the car was on the list and the ticket was in error they will then forward it to the judge for dismissal and you do not need to waste a trip down there, it can all be handled over the phone. I hope this helps.

There are certain times for special events where they will post "Emergency No Parking" signs on the street, for that you cannot park even in front of your house. But this does not happen on a regular basis.

As you can see from the above comments, there are a number of very different circumstances in which a parking permit may be needed to park in front of your house: commuter parking, parking or no parking in close proximity to a school, overnight parking when your house lacks a driveway, etc. The Police Department enforces parking regulations in Maplewood. Call their non-emergency number or stop by the Police Station to learn just which restriction if any applies to the street in front of your house. If you do need a permit, you can get it at town hall. Be sure to to call there before you go to make sure you have the right documentation to bring with you and to determine what the fee if any will be in your case.
