OLS in the news

I clicked on this NY Daily News story, had no idea it would be so local....

The Newark Archdiocese has a well documented history of harboring priests that have been accused of molesting children.

There are at least 46 priests that have allegedly molested children in the Newark Archdiocese.

This is big news but it doesn't seem to be registering with the MOL crowd.

Why is it big news?  Big news would be that OLS effectively self-policed over the years and marched these priests on down to the DA on learning of their misdeeds.

The deacon in the church where I grew up smuggled drugs into the local prison ~5 years ago. Why? Blackmail. What sort of blackmail? Pornographic images.

When he was busted for the drugs, the cops seized his computer but then returned it and never charged him with anything related to the pictures. Why? It was just gay porn. Adult men. To hide that he committed multiple felonies.

He was a genuinely nice person but had to hide being gay for fear of losing his position in the church. Child molestors we can work with but gay? Out of the question.

It's gonna take a lot of "cool" popes before the damage of the last few decades is undone.

I don't understand which part of "Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's" the Church is not understanding.

Child predators belong to Caesar (the DA in this case).

When he was pulled a couple of months ago, the parishioners were told.  The allegations relate to when he was at a different parish.  His role here at OLS was fairly limited I believe. I could be wrong but I thought that was the case.  I thought he came here essentially semi retired to assist with masses. He never looked in good health.

The lawyer for the alleged victims is Mitchell Garabedian, who was portrayed by Stanley Tucci in the recent movie "Spotlight" and by Ted Danson in a TV movie about a decade ago.

the giving of the wine allegation.  is that related to Eucharist or in preparation of the Eucharist?

Disgusting behavior by any governing body, but by a church that purports to follow the teachings of Jesus?? Infinitely worse. Jesus had very strong words for people who mistreat children, and to do it /abet it in His name is some serious stuff. I hope no one whose hands are tainted in this matter are expecting a heavenly reward, because I'd bet against it. Even if the Catholic Church doesn't think priests abusing children is wrong, as they don't seem to, judging by their actions and the ever increasing number of victims, you'd think they'd be bright enough to realize that society does, and that it will eventually affect their power and coffers. Michigan just hired a recycled perv priest, too.

This says a lot. It shows that people can tend to take advantage of the most defenseless people.

The thread title doesn't lend much interest to those who are not members of OLS.

This is seriously disturbing. The title should probably be changed if you want to reach the "MOL masses".
