I suffer from facial neuritis, which sounds rather similar.

As it extends into my gums and teeth, the pain can be lessened by chewing cloves as a symptomatic treatment.

My doctors have prescribed useful neurological oral medications.

it's worth visiting Migraine.com and looking up the tab on symptoms and comorbities, and the forums. Many people with migraines have similar issues and freely discuss tips and strategies there. 

(I'm not saying your friend has migraine. There is so much great info on that site!)
