Not Receiving Optimum eMail on iPad - Problem Solved archived

Just noticed yesterday that I have stopped receiving my Optimum account emails on my iPad. I have Outlook set to keep all messages on the server for 4 days, so I know that's not the problem. I checked all the settings on the iPad and they match the Outlook Optimum settings exactly. I've searched several other forums for a solution, but can't find anything.

Thank you.

I deleted the account from the iPad, then added it back in and I now seem to be getting Optimum emails again. Of course I lost all the ones that were on the iPad, but not a big deal, as long as it keeps working.

The problem now appears like it's an Optimum issue, which I've had recently. I've been on the phone with Optimum twice already today, though both agents have no clue why my emails just disappear from the Optimum webmail, even after changing my password.

Stop using optonline.net for email. I highly recommend against using any ISP for email. They do a lousy job, and things get mighty inconvenient when it's time to change ISP's, because you can't afford to lose your email.

Tom,

I appreciate the advice, but it's pretty late in the game to make a cold turkey switch over, since I use this email account for business and ton's on people have it. I just got off the phone, again, with Cablevision and it now seems to be working, by changing the password, yet again. I have a Gmail account and have started to use it more, but I can't just ignore the optimum account, not that simple.

Thanks.

OK, problem has been solved.

I have an answering system connected to the computer, which uses it's own software. One of the features of the software is that after the system receives a call, you can program it to send you an email, which I had activated. However, I wasn't receiving emails, so I went into the software yesterday and realized that the last time I had this problem and changed my password, I never changed it in the phone software. So, I changed the password and the problem came back. Turns out, there is a check box in the settings that goes back to the email account associated with the software and checks emails, if they have no association with the system, it deletes them from the server. Hence, I unwittingly was deleting messages without knowing it. I have no idea how this feature was activated, I do know that I didn't even know about it, until talking to their customer support earlier.

In any event, all seems to be working fine now.

vermontgolfer, now would be a good time to change your email address. The reason now is a good time is that it's better to do it before you need to, e.g. before you change ISP's.

You do not have to go cold turkey. gmail will suck your mail from optonline into your inbox so all your mail addressed to both addresses lands in your inbox. It will also (optionally) label your mail sent to your old address so that you can notify all your correspondents of your new address in your own sweet time.

gmail will also host a custom domain for you, so you can be nohandicap@vermontgolfer.com if you like, or whatever.

nohandicap, I like that, only wish it was true.........................ROFLOL

I agree with Tom -- but also want to add that the optimum mail infrastructure is horrible. I got an optimum address 10 years ago, and I've been moving more and more to gmail. (and wish I never had to deal with optimum mail)

But in this case, it had nothing to do with Optimum, like them or not.

I also wish that years ago I had started with a gmail or other type account, but I didn't, now I need to migrate, at whatever pace I choose.

Again, while I don't love Cablevision, none of this was their doing, so let's not jump on them for it or maybe, like the stupid jerk that fell into the fountain, maybe I could sue them...................................... :fierce::updown::fingersear:

Right, this problem wasn't their fault, but the next trouble with mail that you WILL have -- and you will have trouble, at some point -- is likely to be caused by it. Start today. You can drag this process out over a long time, if you choose, and there's really no cost to it. If my instructions aren't clear, I'd be happy to go into more detail. If it isn't clear how easy this is, then I haven't described it well enough yet.

Tom, you really should quit trying to be such a know it all, or at least such an ass about it.

Wow, that came from left field, didn't it? I'm trying to help. Who are you, anyway?

Why is it out of left field?
I read MOL every day and see all the posts you make where you constantly talk as if you know everything, you have so much to say about this, and about that, sometimes you are correct, many times you are mistaken It is those many times where you are mistaken that makes me think of you as an ass; why, because you speak with such conviction that everyone should think that what you say is the gospel, such as with vermontgolfer and his email issue. You consistently tell people to switch over to gmail, which in some cases may be beneficial, but you need to take into account that it isn't necessarily all that easy for everyone, and that everyone may have no interest in switching over to gmail, either permanently, or at all. Yet you continue to persist on pushing away at it, and that's just an example.

So, that, and other things, is what made me finally have to say what I said above.

Redman,
If Tom believes in what he is advising, why wouldn't he say it with conviction?

Red Man, again, who are you?

I think you would have had better luck complaining at each instance than complaining about the way I am in general. I don't think I know it all, and I think I'm pretty quick to say I stand corrected.

I don't believe everyone should do anything, I don't believe my word is gospel, and I don't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. I tailor advice to the individual. There are various things I lean towards, such as gmail and Apple computers, but there are some people whom I would advise against one or the other of these things, because of their particular situations. Maybe if I knew vermontgolfer better, I'd see that gmail is not the best for him, but this is not a complete consultation, of course. But he's certainly getting more than his money's worth here, so to speak.

I've gone on too long already. Enjoy your day.

Tom,

If it makes you feel any better, have started a very slow migration to my gmail account.

Red man, Tom and others on this board provide valuable information. If we choose to ignore it or take it, it's up to us.

I think you wereca bit, shall we say, over the top, on your post
