Needed: volunteer opportunities for rising freshmen this summer

Any suggestions? thanks!

Does it have to be with an organization or can it be helping out an elderly or disabled person with things like taking out the trash, clearing out clutter, manning a garage sale table for that person, very minor maintenance like changing lightbulbs, tightening screws.....

The South Orange Elks Rent Party Garden needs volunteers every Saturday morning at 8 am to pick and pack produce for delivery to a food pantry. It usually takes no more than 1.5 hours. Here is the registration link to volunteer:

I've got a project at CHS that I'm working on and could use help with, but we can't get back into the part of the building I need until mid August.

Please post volunteer opportunities for teens here. I have a 16 year-old returning from camp in 10 days. He wants to work and earn money, babysitting and odd jobs, but those are few and far between. I don't want him to be too idle. He is most interested in working with kids or disabled, but those jobs are usually taken by now.

I've been wondering this same thing and couldn't find much online.

I googled "nj volunteer work " and found a few sites that I've seen mentioned in the past here on MOL.

They used to have teen volenteers at Turtleback zoo, don't know if this is still the case.

Might your teen be interested in helping an animal rescue group? Furry Hearts has some young cats and kittens who would greatly benefit from personal attention. At adoption days, a cat who rubs against the bars of the cage or reaches out to people stands a much greater chance at going home than does one who lays in a cage like a meatloaf. Talking to them, holding them, petting them, combing them, playing with them are all things your teen can do with these cats and kittens to help prepare them for life with a family. You can take a cat or kitten home to foster and let your teen learn the responsibility of taking care of a pet or your teen can simply go to Furry Hearts and help to socialize the cats and kittens there. Either way, it's a great non-threatening way to learn compassion and to feel accomplishment when you see the cats responding to you. It's pretty immediate gratification.

Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit has opportunities for people 14 and older.

even though special ed school paid positions would likely be filled...they would likely still take volunteers. http://education.state.nj.us/apssd/

There are many seniors who would welcome help. Maplewood Senior Share, which is a newly formed group would be happy to direct anyone needing volunteer opportunities to seniors who could use help and friendly communications with young volunteers

Please PM me ..looking forward to making these connections .

Furry Hearts Rescue is looking for volunteers to help transport cats and dogs to the vet appointments, and to take pictures of our adoptable pets, or help organize events, and then attend the events and help out that way, or share our pets on social media. If interested, email me (Jeanne) at info@furryheartsrescue.org and title your email with the word "volunteer" in it.

Lots of things to do!

Anyone have a connection to refugee or new immigrant resettlement groups? My teen is interested in this issue, and is hoping to find a way to tutor or help children/youth assimilate. Any leads would be appreciated

I understand Giralds farms has volunteer dog walkers. Train to Madison and an easy walk from there.

Does Maplewoodstock still use volunteers?

Mantram: Whoever is currently running the ESL program out of the Hilton Branch Library may have some leads as to recent refugee/immigrant individuals/groups in the area who would appreciate such help.

Thanks for the lead, Joan! Sounds promising - we'll look into it.

For refugees:

IRC (International Rescue Committee) in Linden and NYC
JAC in West Orange

Catholic Charities

Most of them are over worked and rather incompetent, so you may need to help her call them.
