My dog just ate some hard salami... archived

Prince is a lively beagle mutt and just turned 2 in June. He's never had this before and snagged some slices by accident. I googled it and some say it's pretty harmless if it's a one time thing. Others suggest pedialyte with water and white rice for indigestion/diahrria/vomitting.

He looks fine and running around, but I'm waiting to see if he gets sluggish and I'll alert Dr. Stack if I have to. He's chewed on all kinds of things that have "come up" later (toys, rubber bands)....this dog is a trip!
Why would salami be a problem?

I bring soppressatta from Mia Famiglia to a friend when I visit, and his dog LIVES to eat the casing strips from when I slice it. Never a problem.

I'll bet he didn't eat it by accident. ;-)

Just don't be surprised if he gets diarrhea. And if that doesn't pass in a day, then bring him to Dr. Stack.

@LOST, I just had a knee-jerk reaction because of the spices and high fat that could possibly be bad for his system.

@johnlockedema, okay....you da man and know your food!! I trust your opinion. I won't worry. Thanks! oh oh

@Tom Reingold, He is a little slickster...we have to guard our sweet potato fries with our LIFE!!! Thanks.

He'll be rippin' some beauts.

My wretched dog ate two spinach patties from Munchies just the other day. I was expecting some interesting byproducts, but everything was fine.

Eh, I think he will be fine as a youngster. If he were an older dog, I might be more concerned (but mainly for the mess I might have to clean up... )

Stealing food from Munchies is a high crime! I love their food!

My last dog ate about 10 tootsie rolls once. At least we thought they were tootsie rolls. The next day we got a covered cat litter box. It was a disturbing couple of days in our studio apartment.

Post of the day.

oh oh

I might have a friend whose dog ate a bag of weed a number of years ago. Poor thing had bloodshoot eyes and was running into walls for a few hours.

I bet Prince isn't bothered in the least oh oh

We had a beagle when we were first married - what a thief! She once swiped a cactus.

Dogs naturally eat vegetable & animal matter, including carrion. Their digestive system can handle most anything (our neighbor's black lab swiped two giant slices of chocolate cake one night, no problems despite the chocolate contents).

My 23 lb jack Russell terrier has eaten just about everything. And he's always been fine.

3 full pieces of fried chicken
Box of Russell Stover chocolates
Batch of cupcakes (wrappers included)
1/2 lb of butter
Halloween candy found in back of all closet
Numerous leftovers on table...soup, meat, vegetables, fruit, pasta, sauces, etc.

No worries. Really. oh oh

@debby, yes! He's criminal! blank stare

So far, so good...he's been drinking a lot more water than food but he's had his eye on our Bill & Harry's chinese food, so I guess that's a good sign. I keep asking him if he has a tummy ache...

@Apollo T., I just hope his "beaut" doesn't come out during our last walk tonight. :0&

Salami used to be used as training treats for some trainers. The garlic and strong aroma is usually very enticing, even for dogs who are not all that food motivated.

He'll be fine. Tomcat is right---most dogs have leadbellies.

@mammabear, that little joker is a bandit! :p

@calliope, thanks. I was just concerned about the spices in it.

I've met you and your beagle mix--knowing my beagles--and their ability to digest the strangest stuff--your dog should be ok.

Just keep an eye on him--sound like you're doing that already.

I forgot to mention numerous stuffed animals with furry parts that "travelled all the way through". Good times :/

My friend was once walking her Pointer, and stopped to talk to a friend...all of a sudden, her 4year-old said, "There's Barbie's dress!!"

We lost Elmo's nose last week. Sadly, I found it on a walk LOL

Our old Lab loved to swipe Legos. My husband used to say, "one day, he's gonna crap a house."

On Saturday's my high school boyfriend worked at the sausage counter of a meat market . When he came to pick me up for our Saturday dates he would always bring my dog a package of scraps. Guess who was eagerly waiting at the front door on date nights and worshiped that guy.

.....salami scraps.....just about her favorites!

A relative had two dogs. One day a bag of Hershey's Kisses went missing. He didn't know if one or both had eaten it. The next day on their walk he easily discovered the culprit due to the foil wrappers and little Hershey's Kisses flags poking out of the pile.

grin) This is too funny! @debby, Prince is a lego crapper too!

9 feet of rope---I thought she grew another tail.

And I won't even mention my mother's pearls.
