Multiple murder in Maplewood?!?

Just caught the tail end of the story on the 11PM news. Anyone know what happened?

heard today arrests have been made - no details

Got em both now.

I have never seen a triple homicide garner so little attention.

For everyone reading this thread from out of town, NO, none of this is common here, none of it is dog bites man. South Orange and Maplewood are extremely safe towns (not an opinion- fact. Look up the crime stats). I'm baffled by how little information there is about this particular crime, and also sort of baffled by how little attention it's garnered here (MOL and in town).

I know I'm in "I don't know how he got elected nobody I know voted for him" territory but... I haven't had even a "hey how about that murder... Crazy huh?" conversation.

I think there is little talk because of this point you made.

I can think of 3 recent events which have received little or no comments .

6 alarm fire possible arson

Triple murder

Maplewood declaring itself a Sanctuary City

Hmm I'd think the opposite would be the case. In Chicago 3 shot is sadly common. Here? Never happened, as in not ever.

If you mean that people aren't talking about it because it's like hearing someone got hit by a meteor- unfortunate, but not something that would concern you to the point of checking your life insurance policy for meteor exclusions, yeah that does make sense.

On just a human interest level tho... It's a small town. I would have thought some of their friends would be on MOL, recognizing MOL is but a tiny fraction of SOMA's population.

In any case- glad they are apparently doing well in the investigation .

People don't talk about these things because they don't want to negatively affect home sales. I thought that was obvious.

I'm curious about which news sources people follow that didn't cover it. I saw coverage in Star Ledger and multiple online news feeds, and I believe I saw mention on TV as I went on regional news to get a weather forecasts. I'm not sure where else people expect to get coverage. Granted police haven't been satisfying peoples curiosity on the details, but I've seen basic coverage in all the standard places.

I've seen the NYC evening news (maybe ABC?) cover the story. However, I searched NYTimes website for "Maplewood Murder" and this came up as the #1 / "most relevant" story... The location of the "confectionery store" is now the home Laurence Craig Caterers (across from the Meineke...)

What is there to talk about? There weren't and still aren't a lot of details about the victims or the suspects.

it was covered in the Village Green (more than once IIRC). Also covered on NY local TV news and in the Star-Ledger. Why aren't people freaking out on MOL or FB? I have a few hypotheses. First is that the town is very safe, and most people are probably not thinking that this is the start of the slippery slope toward becoming Camden. Also, the people I recall on MOL who used to freak out over every crime have moved away so we're not hearing from them. And last, there wasn't much information being released by the police, and people are probably waiting for more details before speculating about the crime.

What would have been gained by lots of speculative gossip from people who didn't know what they were talking about?

There was a thread on FB.

I think the fear level would be much higher if the murders appeared to be random violence. We haven't been told the whole story but it seems the victims probably knew the people that murdered them.

What makes you say that?

Fire Department went to the apartment because someone requested authorities to "check on well-being" of the resident. No one reported any violence or breaking and entering. The apartment is on a cul-de-sac and nothing suspicious was reported. If authorities expected a crime scene they would have sent the police.

It's circumstantial, but it tells me the two perps were there for a reason and the people in the apartment let them in.

and the suspects are from towns 2 hours from Maplewood. Not likely they got to that location by chance

6 alarm fire possible arson......ummm, I've seen a thread on this with all sorts of idle speculation. It is a modestly entertaining read [I'm being generous].

Triple murder......i'm relieved to hear the police have suspects in custody and hope that justice will be served. In the absence of facts, i'm glad that there was not a ton of idle speculation in the interim.

Maplewood declaring itself a Sanctuary City......There was an MOL thread regarding the declaration, and you're right it did not generate many comments. I'm guessing the majority of residents don't feel it was a controversial decision. I'd even venture that most residents are pretty happy with the declaration.

People on MOL seem to be freaking out less about many things than in past years. My observation is that the freakouts are posted on Facebook.

There are a lot less people and posts in general.

I agree to some extent that the liberal version of fake news is simply not covering stories. I only learned about this story on MOL, but I'm also quite distant from day to day activity in town.

Other than rank speculation with no factual information there has been no facts presented to even mention yet arson in connection to the fire. Unless you are a fire Marshall involved in the investigation. Which I doubt.

Maybe less posts - but our stats have remained very consistent. We average around 5,000 visits a day with 24,000 page views. Over 30,000 unique visitors monthly. We've seen an uptick lately with registrations as well.

I haven't been holding up my posting quota. Busy with a few projects.

It was covered on TV, in the Star Ledger and on Village Green. So it was definitely reported

I read about it here and on FB, but my wife found out about it from her parents who saw it on TV.

I think the observation was that very few details were mentioned anywhere concerning the murders. If I lived near Van Ness I sure would want more info concerning the killers.

The alleged killers are in custody so no longer represent a threat. The authorities have, for what ever reason they have, not released any details about motive or how it all went down. If and when they do I am sure it will be reported.
