Mulch- Where is the best place to buy bagged cedar mulch? archived

I don't own a truck, so it can't be loose mulch. I'm looking for convenient, easy, quality mulch.
H.D. or Lowes. I usually haul 20 or so bags in my station wagon each season for my garden. Sometimes have to make several trips. By the bag is actually easier to handle.

In addition to HD, I believe Metropolitan Plant will deliver (for a fee). Regardless of where you buy it, just remember to drop them off at various locations on your property ( a few out front, some in the back, etc). It will make the job a little easier....

The Queen of Mulch

PS . . .just don't get RED!

Millstone lawn and garden by the golf course has alot. they will deliver for a fee also.

Shop Rite. And one week in April it's usually on sale and is a dollar cheaper than Home Depot per bag.

What's wrong with red, happy? Is that a regional thing? Where I'm from, we always used red, but I rarely see it here.

I wud never buy Red, and never wud have thot of it. But i did see some red on a house and it looked pretty good. Actually brought out some red in the bricks. I still wudnt do it - but there may be a time/place for everything.

What type of Delivery fee is there, and do they deliver Bagged mulch, or is it a giant pile dumped in my driveway?

Whats wrong with Red, by the way?

some people, myself included after having the red last year, do not think that the red is very natural looking....

I like the red better. Of course I find it harder to find.

We used black and it looked awesome. It faded somewhat to a charcoal color but I thought it was really cool with the greenery and color of the house.
(Could only buy that by the bag.)

Yes, Millstone does deliver bagged mulch. the cedar mulch they sell is nice it comes in 3 cubic foot bags.
They may be a few more cents then Lowes or Home Depot, but they are more helpful. I bought mulch from them and actually hired the kid who works there to spread it for me, he did a good job.

I did the research last year (haven't gotten to it yet this year) and found that Cardinal Lawn & Garden Center (272 Milltown Rd in Springfield) had the best price for black colored cedar mulch. 3 cft black cedar mulch = $5.49 bag

I hate red mulch too! Looks so industrial/commercial, like it belongs in the Costco parking lot.
I always buy pine bark nuggets, in the smallest size available, as I fancy they look the most natural. Ntohing really does, let's face it, but mulching is better than weeding!
Someone told me that cedar mulch might be made from some sort of non-renewable resource (southern swamp forests or something!), so I steer away from that.

Red is better suited for more clay-based soil . . . I just think it looks artificial! Black is beautiful, but does fade a bit. Just rake it and turn it over and it will look like new again (turning over is important for the soil and plants anyhow).

Now let's just get rid of this Nor'easter!

If you are mulching next to your house (or any other structure), stay away from pine or other non-cedar mulches as they can attract termites or other harmful insects. Wood-loving insects hate cedar, though, so homeowners should love it.

We haven't bought any in the last year or two, but we always found the cedar mulch at Millstone to be of a much nicer quality (fewer of the bigger "chunks") than HD and similar. Dubrow's also had good mulch, but they are now out of the retail business, apparently.

Two things to consider:

1) Rubber mulch is made from recycled tires, never fades, doesn't attract bugs, and holds moisture in better than any other product. It also helps the enviornment, and comes in a variety of natural and unnatural colors. We use it here because wood chip mulch would fade very quickly, and we find it keeps the weeds down better than conventional mulch.

2) For the last year or so there have been confirmed instances of (even high quality) wood mulch coming out of New Orleanas. This product has very high levels of arsenic and other toxic materials. A man down here died when he got a splinter from mulch that was contaminated. New Orleans mulch also contains the Formosan termite. Late in 2005, the Louisiana Dept of Agriculture and Forestry banned the export of any contaminated wood, and imposed specific landfills in LA for this material to be placed. Just figure that between typical LA politics and dollars in the right pockets, this never happened.

Isn't the rubber mulch really, really costly though? I know it doesn't need to be replaced as often as cedar mulch, but it's a consideration for many people.

Yes, a large bag is $10. It is a consideration, but here in Florida, we were placing new mulch down every six months. It was also a schlep factor. We bought 50 bags of rubber mulch once, and now don't have to buy 30 bags of wood mulch (for fill in) twice a year.

Where can rubber mulch be purchased in our area?

Home Depot down here has it in stock. They can order it from the manufacturer if it is not one of their regularly stocked items.

You can call the company for more info: 888 436 6846. Other manufacturers such as "IMC" make Rubberific which is sold at Ace and True Value stores.

We have the Rubbermulch rust (brown) color and it hasn't faded at all. The shape of the pieces varies with the brand. IMC's is more like chipped wood, ours is smaller with more rounded edges.

Does the rubber mulch float? We put down cedar much in a spot on a slope where there can be runoff from major rain storms. One year our uphill neighbor used a mulch (don't know what kind) that floated and ended up in our yard during a Nor'easter.
