No direct experience. I know some folks who live in Columbus, OH and visited WVU frequently to do work for them, they liked visiting. WVU is very regional, mostly in-state students, and most of those are from the rural areas near the town. Larger than SHU, big football program, so it likely has a bigger presence in town that SHU does here. Not too far from Pittsburgh for those who want to spend time in a bigger city.
The state is one of only two (Oklahoma the other) where Trump won every county, so there's that.
My daughter is a doctor with Ruby Hospital which is affiliated with WVU. She does what Pathologists do as well as teaching and putting together curriculum for the Medical School. They have two boys in pre school as well as one in the regular school system.
The college plays a major role in the life of the town. Home games during football season clog the streets with those attending the game. The athletic facilities are excellent. The town was conservative in its building plans and thus was not hurt in the recent recession. Student population at the college is currently
30,000 and expected to grow to 50,000 in the next few years. There is a low cost monorail that circles
the city and is in use most of the year. Real estate is cheaper and taxes make me want to cry. Some areas
like Cheat Lake are available for those who would spend more and be a little more out doorsey.
Know that West Virginia is among the poorest states and that is reflected in the condition of the local roads.
However the highways are quite good and Pittsburgh is only 1 1/2 hours north.
My grandsons are active with little league, scouts and have a full calendar. Parents are friendly and eager to help with child activities
There is a new Hilton Garden and several Nice Chain Motels. Avoid the Best Western in Star City, nearby,
it is a haunted house
Public Transportation to the town is almost non existent No passenger train, airport flies small planes
to Washington DC then back to our area. I think there might be a Dollar Bus coming but I am not sure.
Go Mountaineers
PS Town just got a minor league baseball team The stadium is quite nice and you can have a night our without having to take out another mortgage
I had 3 close friends out of HS, way back when that went to WVU. Party school, check the rankings. This link is a few years old, but when I used to visit my friends there we partied a lot, an it seems they still party a lot.

Well I suppose there is no direct link between academia and athletics but the football team, the Mountaineers played in the same league with Rutgers. Rutgers decided it wanted to run with the bigger dogs and moved on
Visited the town when sister was enrolled. Nice town. Active bar scene. Rated one of best places to retire. Search rating site. WVU dominates everything.
Just a bit of trivia........My daughter as a Doctor has her own marked parking space. However since the lot belongs to the University, on all Football home games she has to surrender her parking space since every inch of parking space goes to the football fans. With homes located close to the stadium , frequently homeowners will garage their own cars and rent out their drive way to the football fans needing space.
My daughter and her family have enjoyed living in Morgantown for a few years now. Her mother and I only wished they lived a little closer to us than a six hour drive
By the way, W.V. has lodges in several of their state parks. They are clean, inexpensive and well run.
I loved Morgantown when I visited it for a scientific convention as an undergrad. They also recruited me for their doctoral program in pharmacology but I decided to go to Michigan for that work. The decision wasn't because of the town or college though. It had to do with the specific faculty of the departments and I was more interested in what a couple profs at Michigan were doing.
It might be a party school but their science efforts are just as capable as other universities. It's just not in a huge metro area.

I'm interested in any insights about West Virginia U and the feeling/character of the city/area.
Thank you!
