Monthly Cost of Parking at PATH Stations archived

Feb 26, 2015 at 4:21am
Hello,

I will soon be commuting from Madison to downtown NYC in the financial district. I am planning on driving to a PATH station (Newark, Harrison, Journal Square, etc) to take the PATH to WTC. Does anyone park at facilities near these stations and how much do you pay monthly to park and where is the facility located?

I will not consider taking NJ Transit. Too pricey!

Thank you!
Monthly parking in JC by Exchange Place Path Station is about $250+ per month. Add the cost of the Path and Tolls and you are probably looking at the same as public transit.

Parking at the newish Harrison garage is around $200/month, and the lots nearest to Newark Penn are more than that. A train pass to NY Penn or Hoboken is just under $200. As @pmartinezv says, not much of a difference between parking costs and train fare.

Except that WWW is coming from Madison--that's $273 to Hoboken/$308 to NYP.

Yes, NJ Transit would be over $3600 a year and I would need a MetroCard rather than the PATH Card which is $1344 a year vs $1068. Kind of a significant savings in my mind. That's why I'm trying to figure out options for parking but a lot of parking facilities do not list prices or have websites. I found one around the corner from Journal Square for $170/month.

Don't forget to add tolls. Unless you are planning on taking the 1&9 Truck you will need to pay the NJ Turnpike tolls which will run you about $4 per day.

^^^ Not just tolls but gasoline. wear and tear on the vehicle, etc. Even commuting from Madison, you may find the cost of driving to one of the PATH stations a wash. Have you looked into the possibility of commuting by bus to either Newark or Journal Square for the PATH train, or to Port Authority Bus Terminal if going to midtown?

Jeez, sounds like people here work for NJ Transit. Honestly, I am not hoping to be at this job long because this was a sudden change and a huge difference and inconvenience for me. Really, all I want is an idea of parking prices near the PATH stations. I will not be taking NJ Transit rail and buses are not convenient from Madison.

Not at all. I drive to work in JC. But my employer subsidizes my parking otherwise I would be taking the train. Just pointing out that driving is not always the cheaper option unless, like me, have a employer subsidy. Either way, make sure to inquire about pre-tax transit or parking deductions which will lower your costs a little be by using pre-tax funds.

Harrison is the place to go. The nice indoor lot next to the path is $11 per day with monthly parking for less. There was an outdoor lot across the street was $7 per day last year.

This is where I park every day......

How is traffic getting to JC in the mornings?

But if you have wage works that would cover your parking pre tax. I think the parking pre tax is a lot higher then the transit amount .

How do you like this place and how is the walk to the train station (safe?)? How's the traffic in the area in the morning around 7-7:30? I was looking at this place since the monthly price seems reasonable as does the $8/10hrs which is what I will be using for 2 weeks in March.

I'm talking to HR about this today and will be negotiating salary to reflect this as well. Like I said, this was an unexpected change and a huge inconvenience for me so they are going to need to pay up...

Driving to JC right now with the Pulasky closed is still a crapshoot to be honest. Some days is ok, like today as it only took me 45 minutes from Maplewood, but sometimes it takes me well over an hour and on an occasion it has taken me over 1.5hrs. Note that with no traffic I am at the office in less than 30 minutes and my commute home is typically 35 minutes even with a little bit of traffic, but the Pulasky is open outbound.
There is daily parking at the Trump building by Exchange place for $11 per day if you buy a set. That could be an option for the occasional day when you need to drive in. Not sure about monthly parking though.

It depends what time you are headed to JC. My drive times have varied between 30 minutes inbound to 45 some days . I use the Waze app and it gives the best routes and reroutes me when traffic is bad.

The locations is well located across journal square from Path with a well traveled route ( stay away from the hot dogs at Boulevard Drinks, they're addicitng )

Going home here's a good entrance to the skyway from Tonnele Avenue Circle.

When Jersye City revitalizes the Loews theater as an arts complex this whole area will be really neat.

What other options aside from the Turnpike Extension and the 1&9 Truck are there to get into JC? I am heading to Exchange place so I have found 1&9 Truck add a significant amount of time even when there is traffic to crossed the toll lanes to enter the Turnpike Extension. I usually leave Maplewood between 7:15-7:20 am since I have to drop off the baby at daycare which opens at 7am. I don't get to office until about 8:15-8:30 most days and some even later. Getting on the road at 7:00 does make a difference though.

I take 1&9 and divert some days thru Kearny over to Route 7 ( thank you Waze) where I go over the dilapidated WittPenn Bridge soon the be replaced up to Journal Square. It gets you onto the bridge at the last entrance and you avoid the route 280 bridge and the backup to the WittPenn.
Other days the turnpike extension to 14a then to Route 440 up Journal Square.

I come down 78 to Newport in Jersey City ,my garage is next to the PATH station . I take the TP in $1.90 before 7:04 $2.40 after . I take the SkyWay out. If you cross the 14 toll barrier before 7:10 it's pretty easy , after that you got the merge onto the NBB. During the summertime or rather when schools are out ,it becomes dramaticly easier. Newport PATH offers all PATH options. spplus is the web site. I tried looking the monthy rate up , it was taking forever . My guess is $400.00 . Mine is worker subed.

Thank you so much for the info. I'm glad it's a safe walk. Google Maps seemed a bit outdated and I'm not too familiar with Jersey City. I will try to get into Jersey City around 7-7:15 to make it to my office around 8. I will probably try leaving at a few different times for the first week to see how long it takes in the morning. I'd probably go 24-78-truck route 1&9 in and the Skyway out. I'd like to avoid tolls if possible.

Everybody I know from Madison takes the train to Hoboken then PATH to WTC. They park at the train or walk in Madison. Coming from 1 & 9 into Jsq around 7:00 is a crap shoot . TP to Newport area much more predictable.
