Moisturizers burn my eyes Suggestions? archived

Apr 7, 2010 at 4:56am
Any facial moisturizers I've tried burn my eyes (I wear contacts) and turn my eyelids red. I keep it a good distance from my eyes, yet it still happens. I've tried many brands. Any suggestions? Fragrance free preferred.
I get irritated by the sun block that is in most facial moisturizers. Oil of Olay has been the best for me.

You could try a more gentle face soap and skip the moisturizer.

I think the OP is referring to sunscreen.
Have you tried the Johnson's baby one? When my kids were little that was the only one that didn't irritate them terribly. Otherwise I use the Aveeno SPF 70 facial one or Neutrogena and neither of them irritate my eyes.

Is it the moisturizer or is it the product you use to remove eye makeup?
I could recommend something offline if you want to whisper me.

The problem is with regular moisturizers, not sun block or makeup removers. Thanks

I like Neutrogena sensitive skin moisturizer.
it is oil free. not sure about fragrance free but if it DOES have a fragrance I have not noticed it.

Oil of Olay does not burn my eyes.

Knight, you're going to have to keep trying a product a week until you find the right one.
sucks $$-wise, but clearly you have a severe reaction that most people don't have to suffer through.

Knightwatchman- Silly question, but do you wash your hands after applying the moisturizer?
If you don't, you probably should. If you do, you may be allergic/sensitive to whatever you are washing your hands with.

Neutrogena for sensitive skin, if you haven't already tried it. If all else fails, then Cetaphil or Eucerin, which are designed to be very bland (but don't have sunscreen). I use the Cetaphil cream and am very happy with it. It's light and non-irritating (whereas most everything else stings or reddens my face), and dirt cheap.

But since the irritation is specifically around your eyes, could it possibly be something about your eye makeup, if any, or contact lens products??

Might be something for a dermatologist to consider?

Have you tried putting in eye drops right after you moisterize? I do that in the summer with sun screen. I doubt it is very scientific but it seems to keep the sunscreen from irritating my eyes. I use aveeno or neutragena- whatever the highest spf is I can get my hands on for sensitive skin.

Do you put your contacts in before or after moisturizing? The lenses could be holding the moisturizer in your eyes, causing the irritation. Try putting them in after (and after washing your hands) so the moisturizer can absorb into your skin first.

You might want to try an organic moisturizer. I have the same burning issue, but my issue is with sunscreen on my face. I just tried a moisturizer (which I thought was sunscreen, but just has sunblock in it), and it didn't sting - it's by Juice Beauty and I got it at Sephora - it's certified organic.

Sephora gives free samples, so you may explain the issue you're having and see if they have suggestions. Also try a dermatologist.

Good luck!

Try Aveeno Ultra Calming lotion. It doesn't irritate my eyes like some moisturizers do and it does have sunscreen.

Don't put moisturizer or sunscreen anywhere near your eyes. When you perspire the least bit it will travel along laugh lines and go straight into your eyes, burning you.
I have the same problem and it hurts. A lot!

Second suggestion, put your contact lenses in first.
Rinse your face in the entire eye area before doing anything else. Make sure your hands are scrupulously free of oils, lotions, soap residue before inserting lens. Rinse eye area afterwards as well.

Another idea: Gently wipe any extra cream or sunscreen away from the eye area after applying to the face. Even though you avoid the eye, it can mix with sweat and again, travel from your forehead , sides of face/ temples... and go towards eye. Wiping it before it gets there is critical to avoiding that whole painful tearing thing that happens.

Aveeno calming lotion is great as is Cetaphil and others recommended.

I had the same problem with stinging, and I love this.

I like the DCL products (although I keep calling it DCH for some reason...)

Neutrogena for sensitive skin--Oil free--Moisture...is on on the label--only product I can use otherwise the skin around my eyes & on my eyelids actually burns-turns red and start to peel within a day or two....same goes for certain make-up products too... I stay away from anything that has perfume or paba or high amounts of sunscreen or any product with the "age defying" chemicals.

Kielhs products are really good.

I have the same issue and found that using a cream made just for eyes makes a big difference. I really like clinique's "all about eyes."
