I am planning to see three movies based on his recommendations. And his assessment of Passengers, 2.5, caused me to lower my expectations and thus enjoy the movie more than I would have. He is the gift that keeps on giving.
Here's Sbenois Xmas day ratings:
Sing. 3.5 stars. Excellent
Fences. 3.5 stars. Great movie. Lots of awards for this one
Passengers 2.5 stars. A slow starting movie that builds as it goes. Eh
Why Him 2.5 stars. Hysterical in some places
LaLaLand 2 stars. Love Ryan Gosling. Didn't love the movie. Meh.
Rogue One. 4 stars. Terrific
I think it makes sense to start a 2016 movies thread - will do shortly.

I was glad to see he took my advice not to see Collateral Beauty. The actors were definitely in it for the money...
The prevalence of half stars makes me wonder why more reviewers don't switch to eight-star scales.
"That comment deserves three stars!" -- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, using the new system.

Maybe they overestimate their audience's ability to comprehend decimal points.
Could be. I have to admit, though, "8.5" went over my head even after it was retitled.
