I had the same thought - Read MOL to find out what you've forgotten on your to-do list.

If the pool loses those who have managed it for 15+ years all who go to the pool are in for a rude awakening of what happens when someone who doesn't care about a town is put in charge

???

Yes. The info is online, and once again, I'm experiencing major sticker shock at the cost. At least they tiered it this year... But man... That shiz is not cheap. Well worth it, though, if you basically live there in the summer, as we do!

very well worth it.

Well, fwiw, we had no town pools where I grew up in central jersey. We had private clubs to choose from, which were well over $1000 to join. In the 80s. So, by comparison, whatever you pay in maplewood is reasonable. That said, I'm thankful for our awesome and reasonably priced South Orange pool. Can't wait for summer!

$405 for Early Bird Family #1 comes out to about a grande regular a day.

Can anyone speak to the temperature of the pool water? This is our first time using the pool. Also, do they have a separate pool for small children who can't swim yet? What kind of lifeguard coverage is availabe. Sorry for the questions, but don't really get these answers on the site.

Any other pluses or minuses you can think of would be appreciated.

They have three pools. One is a baby pool which is very shallow, has a sloped entrance on one side, and includes water features for the kids to play with. There is a middle sized pool which I can't tell you much about because my two still use the kiddie pool. And there is the big pool.

The water is not heated. In the early and late part of the season it can be a bit chilly, especially when the sun isn't hitting the water directly. During hot days, especially during full sun, the water temp is not an issue.

They have lifeguards at the pool, even the baby pool where the water doesn't get more than 2 feet deep. Lifeguards are changed on a regular basis to avoid fatigue/zoning out from staring at the same thing for too long.

When you say "chilly" do you mean it's unbearable even after you've immersed yourself or just that initial acclimation after getting in?

Just the initial immersion, but when it gets shady at the end of the day on a cooler day you won't want to stay in as long.

Is the diving tank still used? That would be a fourth pool. Because it is very deep it stays cool until late in the summer, and I always liked it best. The main pool is usually in the 80-degree range but warms up if it's hot. The training pool can be much warmer. (Ick.) The baby pool is usually warmest.

Why Ick? I'd appreciate your honesty.

The combination of warm water and a large number of young swimmers can result in frequent, sometimes pool-clearing accidents.

Really? Frequent? Never happened with us.

Shallower pools also heat up faster than deep pools on warmer days.

In my experience the different pools seem to vary in temperature, but last year I thought they were all on the chilly (but not unbearable) side. It's no problem on hot days.

Always one to complain when warranted, I say the pool is a great deal and the fees have not gone up for three years, last to cover some needed renovations and the new water slides. The pool is also self-sustaining, funded only by fees, with no tax money.

Yes true, I think compared to other town pools in northern Jersey this is a great deal. My only concerns are cleanliness and temperature. We belonged to another town pool elsewhere and, for whatever reason, none of us could endure the cold temperatures. Granted it was also at a bit of an altitude and one side had heavy tree shading, so that obviously impacted the temperature.

As far as the yuck factor, yeah I'm used to that for little kids. Hopefully they are not over-chlorinating. Last time, in another pool, they did that I lost half of my silver jewelry (or what I thought was silver, silly me)

It depends on your sensitivity to cold and whether we have a hot or cool summer. Personally, I find the SO pool pretty darn cold for my liking especially last summer when the weather was not scorching. A couple of nights that go down into the 60's make for an awfully chilly pool until it has time to warm up a bit in the late afternoon. That being said, we still go a lot to see friends and hang out. I love the vibe just not always the temperature! If it is in your budget I prefer Lifetime's pool since it is heated and has a zero entry. Allows me to keep an eye on the kids without getting completely submersed myself which I don't necessarily want to do every day.

It was a VERY mild summer last year. Normally we get some real hot spells that warm up the water considerably.

Are infants required to wear a rubber diaper cover? I would like to avoid another Foot/Hand/Mouth disease episode this year.

Kids with diapers are not allowed in the main pool. Not sure about the training pool.

Kids in the baby pool are definitely supposed to wear swim diapers.

No swim diapers allowed in the training pool.
