Maplewood in the News on TV

Wondering why no one has brought up the news of car thieves in Maplewood, on the

news last nite. Very unsettling to say the least. Does anyone have any concerns?

Or doing anything different about car safety?

We have always kept our cars in our garage and these incidents (one of which happened to my across-the-street neighbors) have strengthened our resolve to continue that practice.

Also wondering if we should pay for the wheel locks that we did not elect to get when we got our new car a few months ago.  (It's the same model as the aforesaid neighbor's car.)

It was on FB and VG.  There was a run like this in SO some time ago in the lot next to Ridge I think.

Always get wheel locks.  They will deter your average hack, though likely not these guys, though a complete set of 25 may not make it worth their time.  A LOUD tilt alarm also helps a lot.

I don't have to worry about my car.....thieves would be doing me a favor!

Village Green posted this to Facebook an hour and twenty minutes before Joe did.

Periodically there has been bouts of car stealing in Maplewood as far back as I can remember, 40 plus years ago. Breakins too.

Does everyone here use a third party security system in their home?

I have been reading the MPD blotter recently and thus ordered these for our vehicles.

Wow mcgard is still using that same keyway pattern.

Looks like it.  KYO-EI made a decent magnetized lock that was better than your average lock... Dency 2000? Nengun may have it... won't help me, but the Honda, etc crowd would be better served with those than with Gorillas or Mcgards or whatever else PepBoys and Autozone are shilling.  Rule of thumb: if they sell it, don't buy it...theives are already light-years ahead of it.

 oh oh

So where they state "Computer generated key designs means your locks are the only ones like ‘em" that isn't necessarily true?  Seems that even a feeble deterrent is better than no deterrent - am hopeful would-be thieves see the deterrent and target someone else.  Glad I don't have a Jeep or Range Rover...

The inside key is irrelevant, and they can shear off.  Whack the below on, or some reverse burr socket you've got lying around that's just a mm or so smaller, grab an impact or breaker bar, and off you go.  Else buy a Matco kit.  Either way they're off in no time.  Mcgard locks may stop your average Irvington/Newark hack, especially if you're using 25 and not 5, but not the guys stealing wheels now.

Or ask freeway... he likely has a bag of goodies in his trunk for when he overtorques his Volks.  oh oh

i have a box full of mcgard keys just from buying wrecked cars and checking the glovebox (you could order them for honda since forever right at the dealership). I've used sparkplug deep sockets (modded but i wont go into full details) to remove lug locks.

A company a few years back sold lugs that were smooth and stuck out about 2 inches. The removal tool was some torx bit that went inside the middle of the lug. They went out of business and no one I knew owned them.

For my volks and lensos and BBS and mugens i mark the wheels with the serial number or vin inside the wheel.

. I've used 5 lug locks on each rim. Its a pain in the ass on track day or if you catch a flat.  A buddy of mine had 4 (non type r honda 4x100) different sets of lug locks on the car at once meaning each wheel required 4 keys to remove 1 wheel. They just stole his whole car.

Batman is correct. Basic lug locks will slow down the jv team but specialized rings targeting certain vehicles won't even flinch at them.

How did you divine where the thieves are from?

I don't believe I did.
