looking to install split/ductless air conditioning

any recommendations for companies that install split/ductless air conditioning that have good prices and service

Yes Call Superior Tech. Ask for Wayne. http://www.superiortechhvacandr.com/

when I was shopping around a couple of years ago, indoor air I think is the name gave me a quote that was reasonable.  Good guyS. Ultimately decided for central air, though.

Try John Kubilus at Charles Dae, Inc. in South Orange 973-951-8584

Any other suggestions?

google "mr slim" (mitsubishi product)

and follow web site to USA & then your location

they list a number of installers in the vicinty.

Speer Air did mine. Talk to Kevin. http://www.speerair.com/

We also used Speer Air.

We had good conversations with Speer Air and Air Group. Not ready to pull the financial trigger yet but they both seemed knowledgeable and the price was similar

What are we talking about $$ all in?

We used Air Group, they were very professional and relatively fast.

They came with 9 vans & trucks. Was a little over $12K about 6 years ago.

Guess it depends on the size of your house. Two years ago Speer quoted us $17,000 for 36,000 Btu cooling capacity.

That's interesting -- Air Group must have gotten wind of how high they were quoting. 2 years ago they were almost double the quote from Speer (and the salesman was one of the most obnoxious I've ever met)!

The discussion has drifted away from ductless systems. Call John Kubilus at Charles Dae, Inc. in South Orange 973-951-8584. This is a busy time for HVAC companies so it may be worth your while to wait until September or October.

How many units on the inside?

Thanks--We have central air but it doesn't work on the 3rd floor--was thinking about having one unit installed there so the central A/C works better on the second floor (mediocre on 2nd Floor now). Wondering what that would cost just for that one unit? Thx

no I think we are still talking ductless

Tarheels, that is exactly my experience too.

Both Speer and Air Group do ductless systems, among other things. In our house they both proposed ductless on the 1st floor and ducted on the 2nd/3rd.

For split/ductless? That sounds like a Central Air price ... or am I living in the past?

Yes, for split/ductless. That's why we still have window ACs.

How many units was the quote for? I had two installed, one for the lower floor and one for the upstairs (attic converted to a huge master suite) -- and I only paid $6,000 from Speer!

I was going to do ductless and then it was pointed out that you have this huge thing hanging on your wall, permanently. Then high velocity was suggested and I was going to go with that...until someone said that a ducted system would actually NOT take up too much space, given the configuration of rooms in my house. So full circle for me.

I have to admit I don't like the big-thing-hanging-on-the-wall aspect, but at the same time, I really hate the thought of all the energy/money wasted in cooling an entire floor when all I need is one or two rooms cooled at any given time.

Gerryl, the price for your system has me in shock. We paid only $3,000 more than that for a full-on central air system with two zones about 10 years ago in our West Orange house. If the ductless costs so much, why on earth would people do it? (I mean, apart from the savings in energy costs over a long period of time.) And I can't believe that after spending that much money you still need window units.

Now I'm re-thinking our plan to go with the ductless mini-splits. Jeez.

For this summer, I think we are going to try portable units for the kitchen/living space and master bedroom. I can't stand the biannual process of begging Mr. PeggyC to put window units in, then dealing with the freaking noise. I want something I can "install" by myself as the season requires.

Next year, after we have sold one or two houses from our inventory (snort... where's the sarcasm emoticon?) I will give all this some more thought.

What the contract said was 3 zone for first floor. Each zone producing 12,000BTUh at $8872. I had him write out two different estimates in case we did only half of the house. The second one reads 3 zones for bedrooms (upstairs). Two of those zones are 7000 BTUH. The third zone is $9000 BTUH. That was priced at $7895. The cost seemed too high for us.

It pisses my husband because his Korean colleagues say ductless there is inexpensive.

That is a lot of zones. What kind of square footage is your house, if you don't mind my asking more questions? I have always heard that ductless is much less expensive than ordinary central a/c to install and run, but maybe I have been wrong about that. Did you get estimates for central air, or only ductless?

Well, that is a big system. If you had done both would there have been a discount?
