Looking for a Venue for an Indian Wedding Party - Any suggestions? archived

Hi,

I'm looking for a venue for a Mendhi party for next fall for about 150 people. Ideally a place that serves Indian food or one that will let us bring in our own caterers. This isn't for the wedding ceremony itself so we're trying to keep the budget on the lower side. Any ideas or suggestions? We can't seem to find a place in the area that's large enough.

Thanks!
Have you checked out the places around the 'Little India' expat enclave in Oak Tree Rd, Iselin? It's 12 miles from here.

They have loads of free newspapers for the Indian community with adverts for catering halls and indeed caterers... oh oh

Alas Sona is too small for us, though we may be able to have them cater, and Iselin/Edison are a bit farther then we want to go! It's about half an hour drive. We may end up doing that but will have a lot of guests in from out of town without cars. We're hoping to find a space, like a woman's club or banquet hall that's much much closer to Maplewood/South Orange!

I have seen quite a few Indian weddings at the Hanover Marriott on Rt. 10. They have many banquet rooms. It's only about 20 or so minutes away.

How about the Maplewood Women's Club? Please post the date so I can crash the wedding. I've always wanted to go to an Indian wedding.

I think that I need more information.... are you planning full-blown Desi decorations or are you looking for something that has its own "character"? We had our Nikah/Menhdi in NYC and the venue provided all of the "character" that we needed. However, I've been to plenty of Desi/Indian/Pakistani weddings where the place was completely transformed with the decorations. If you plan to decorate, you could pretty much do any of the local venues around here with rental halls, such as the Elks. Also, for some of our functions we had the buffet outside covered with tents so that there was more room in the main area, don't know if this is an option for the time of year that you are looking for.

I would also love to crash, and I can have my lehenga ready!!!

Hi Kthnry - We'd love to use the Maplewood Women's club! But we're getting married in October and they're selling the space, so only renting through July. Where else in Maplewood/South Orange can an Indian Wedding fit?

Chris, thanks for your post. I'll give you a call, although I'm not sure we'll be able to squeeze 150 people in to the Highland Place Bar! We're looking more for a large, banquet-y hall type of place, ideally one with a stage, or one where we can put in a small stage.

If you're looking for more of a traditional wedding place, there's a Portuguese restaurant and banquet center in Union on Vauxhall called Costa del Sol. I've been in the ballroom many times, because the owners also run the daycare aross the street that my kids attend, so they hold special parties there. There's also a large covered "picnic" area outside that could be nice depending on when in October your event is going to be held. I don't know if they let you bring in outside food, but I can always talk to them about it. Feel free to whisper me if so. The website is http://www.costadelsolnj.com/.

And if you do go to Edison, there's a large banquet hall there in the same shopping complex as Moghul restaurant. Sorry I don't know the name.

It may be too far for you, but Chand Palace in Parsippany has a banquet hall.

Would Neelam fit your needs?? I think it is bigger than Sona, but the food at Sona is better than Neelam.

Also, there is a place on Fairview Ave in SO called the Father Vincent Monella Italian Cultural Center or something like that. I have been to an outdoor party there, so they do rent it out. But I do not have a contact number. Maybe someone here can chime in.

Another thought is the Maplewood Country Club.

Just thought of somewhere: the Short Hills Racquets Club.

It is directly across the street and 'village green' from the westbound platform of the Short Hills train station - so it's a fantastic location for guests without cars.

I've been to an event there; there is a nice room which should easily accommodate 150 people.

second for Costa del Sol oh oh

Corey oh oh

Not as budget friendly but the Hyatt in Jersey City hosts a lot of Indian Weddings and parties. They have a bunch of different ballrooms including one on the top floor with views of NYC.

I went to an Indian Baby Shower at Chand Palace. The food was great and they had a separate buffet for (I forgot the term they used) Vegetarian without garlic. They also have a small stage and I am pretty sure there were at least 150 people there.

Would that be for Jains? They don't eat root vegetables in general, out of respect for living things (plant must be killed to get root, plus things like worms might be harmed).

Wow. Not judging, but that’s like uber-vegan

The Hyatt Hotel- Jersey City. They can help with all the arrangements. At my prior job, they were a client of ours. They do many Indian weddings and the brides just raved about their services. They can provide Indian catering. 201-469-4548.
