Looking for a tree cutting company

Mar 27, 2025 at 9:36am

Hi - I live in Maplewood and I am looking at a company that could help us cut a tree and remove its stump. Looking for a reliable business, fairly priced and not backed by private equity. Any you have used and particularly liked? - Thanks

I and others I know have had good experiences with Frank’s Tree Service, which I believe is based in Summit. Last time round, I’m pretty sure I dealt with the owner, Frank.

Note: You are required to use a registered company from Maplewood township's list:

https://www.maplewoodnj.gov/government/public-works/tree-removal

Also note from that Maplewood Permit regulation: As of April 2nd, 2024, per Ordinance 3115-24 amendment to Chapter 227 to include tree fund and tree replacement. All trees removed must be replaced with the equal number of trees or donate $375 per tree removed to a tree fund.

I had a good experience about 8 months ago with Ticos Tree Service out of Orange. The arborist who gave us the estimate recognized a problem I suspected with our tree. They gave one of the lower estimates to take it down along with grinding down the stump, were professional and friendly, used a crane and did a careful job around the wires that crossed the tree. They also protected a planting next to the tree from the falling debris.

Another vote for Franks. Excellent service and good cleanup. They are about the same price as any of the other well-known contractors.

Are any of these companies backed by private equity? I’ve never heard that comment before.

Get multiple estimates.

Girons Tree was enthusiastically recommended here many years ago. Based on that, I first used them, and they did more work here a few years later.

Good value.

I see now that they’re on the list sprout referred to - if you are in Maplewood.

On the list, we've had excellent service from Tico's.

I have used Frank's for about 25 years for very big and risky jobs, (huge branches over the roof.) Speak to Julian.

Non emergency work is best done in the fall after nesting season.

Thank you for your suggestions. This business has mixed reviews online.

Thank you for the information shared and suggestion. I have ramped up on the town's requirement and reached out to Ticos for a quote.

if you need another quote, I highly recommend Friendly Tree. They’ve given us great service for years and they have a terrific arborist.
