Looking for a home to rent in Maplewood/South Orange

We've been Maplewood residents for 25 years and now need to move due to my husband's illness. Need a 3+ BR house with a first floor bedroom and full bath. Bonus points for a house that's walking distance to train. Please lmk if you have any leads! My email is jcovcopy@comcast.net. Thanks.

If you need to move because your husband can not use stairs, have you considered installing a stair lift in your home?

+1

My grandparents have a ranch with many steps up the front and from the cellar. My grandmother had been struggling for some time getting up the interior stairs. They had a seat that rides up the track along the cellar stairs and it works very well for them.

There is a house for sale on Valley by the golf course. I think it's a 3BR, but it definitely has at least one bedroom on the ground floor. It's near Rynda and Millburn Ave. It was being rented previously (by a friend of ours) and now the owner has it up for sale. It's a 15 minute walk to the village.

In addition to the ground floor bedroom/full bath, you need to consider ease of access into and out of the house you choose. Most houses in town have rather steep stairs leading to the front door and other doorways. Some could accommodate an ADA compliant entrance ramp. Others not so much. If your husband is wheel chair bound, you should also consider the width of doorways and any passageways in making your decision.

There are ADA compliant ramps that are made of aluminum, and are not considered permanent, and therefore do not require permits. I have one.

My concern was with the slope of the ramp needed to meet site requirements; not the issue of permits.

The more steps you have, the longer the ramp has to be. We require a pretty long ramp. We decided to use the back deck rather than the front door, so that the long ramp doesn't extend into the street. It's mostly hidden by hedges, and can only be seen if you're on my front lawn, looking directly at the side of the house.

Will keep an eye out for this
