Logic Puzzles for Kids archived

My kids love logic puzzles and keep asking me for more of them. I haven't seen a good book of such puzzles for YOUNG children.

Here's an old one we gave them the other day that they loved:

A logician walks into a small town and he decides to get a haircut. There are only two barbers in town. The first one is in an immaculate store, wearing clean clothes, has perfect hair and has a few chairs to sit in.

The second barber is in a very dirty store, his clothes are all marked, his hair is sloppily worn and he has only one chair to sit in.

Which barber shop does the logician choose?

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Anyone have some other fun puzzles for little ones?
It all depends on whether either of the barbers go out of town for their haircuts or not.

For Heaven's sake will you give it a break?

a man is running home. he sees someone holding something and he turns around and runs back to where he came from. discuss

judy, he;s a baseball player running back to third base because the catcher has the ball.

pennboy, if your kids are old enough to read, the old Encyclopedia Brown books were great.

rastro...not fair...most people labor over it for a few questions...well done!

I don't know if you allow computers in your house but the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys computer games are fantastic puzzlers.

They combine encryptions, logic, memory games, visual patterns etc. all within the games storyline. The games can be played on two levels of difficulty as well. I always delight when I watch my kids become engrossed for days on end when a new game arrives. They each have a specific location at the core (Paris, Seattle, New Orleans, Loch Ness, Hawaii) and the subject matter reinforces the location's culture and depicts the native characters quite accurately. The games even include all the "research material" needed to study up on the subjects at hand.

Also, playing Mastermind is a great way to get them to use logic to solve problems.

what'd I do?

I started with "To Mock a Mockingbird" when I was a kid, but I can't remember how old I was, or what age it is targeted to.

I later went through several other logic puzzle books also by Raymond Smullyan, and listed on Wikipedia... but I think I probably liked the Mockingbird one best, since I still remember it:

The messy barbershop, under the assumption that the messy barber gave the neat barber his haircut.

What age is this for? I loved logic games as a kid and my grandfather and I used to do the Mensa books together. When I got a little older we raced instead of him helping me. I think he got me the first book when I was in 3rd or 4th grade.

five birds on a fence...shoot one...how many are left on the fence?

Come on Hank...the gunshot scares them all away

Who remembers the one about the accident involving father and son.....father dies I think...son goes into surgery...surgeon gravely announces " I cannot operate on this patient, for he is my son" ? How can this be?

I always hated that one

Did you look on Amazon? I did a search for "brain teasers" under the category "Children's Books" and got a large list.

Some other things to consider:

"Spy Fox" is a good computer game for young children, if they still make it.

Many fun children's activity books from Dover Books: http://store.doverpublications.com/
Not sure is they have many dealing with logic, but they have cool stuff for smart kids.

Dr is Mom wouldn't work today, but in the 60's and 70's and under the mild influence of alcohol, it worked everytime.

Oh, I remember that joke. It's so offensive now.

I don't think it's offensive. It is a poignant reminder that, at the time, it was so far-fetched that the mom would be a doctor. Times have changed, obviously.

It never should have been that way in the first place. I grew up surrounded by that mindset and it prevented many women from achieving their potential.

I remember when that episode of All in the Family aired for the first time!

Must every thread get into a political argument!?

Thanks for the baseball one and the bird one; those are new.

Any more? Here's one a little Penn liked:

You're trapped in a room with two doors to get out. Behind one are five lions that haven't been fed for a year; behind the other are five tigers that were fed five hours ago. Which door do you choose?

Please supply some more puzzles!

You'd open the door with the five lions that haven't been fed in a year because they'd be dead, silly!

Bono, The Edge, Adam, and Larry must cross a dark bridge in order to reach the stage where they are due to play in 17 minutes. The have only one flashlight between them which must be used to cross the bridge safely and may not be thrown, only carried across the bridge.

The bridge will hold up to two band members at any time.

Each member crosses at his own pace and two members must go at the slower member's pace.

Bono can cross in one minute, The Edge in two, Adam in five, and Larry in ten.

How do they make it in time?

Bono & Edge=2 mins
Bono (back)=1
Larry & Adam=10
Edge (back)=2
Bono & Edge=2

Total: 17 mins

A man lives on the 58th floor of a building. Every day he takes the elevator down to the lobby and goes to work.

When he comes home, he always goes to the 35th floor and walks the rest of the way up.

Why?

(None of the little Penns could get this one, nor Mrs. Penn for that matter.)
