Good list. I went out at 2 PM to put gas in car in case power went out - BTW, it was already a mess out there! Gas is for my car and also potentially for generator - I have a siphon pump at the ready. But when we lose power, so do gas stations. Hoard gas.

Yeah, but hoard it carefully. Better to go a day or two without power than lose your home in a fire.

True. I keep two 5-gallon cans in the garage with Sta Bil. Each Labor Day, those 10 gallons go in the cars and we get fresh gas and new Sta Bil.

I was thinking about what advice I wanted to share with my high school students based on Thursday's horrific experience.
Your suggestions would be appreciated.
Here's my list so far:
- always go to the bathroom before you leave
- have water in the car, and snacks if possible
- always keep your gas tank at least half-full
- in the midst of a snow storm you are better off using local streets where you have alternatives and safe places to pull over.
- if you do not wear "sensible shoes" keep warm socks and a pair of decent walking shoes in your car in case you need to walk home through the snow.
- have a phone charger in your car
