Maybe we should leave feral cats that move downtown Maplewood and South Orange alone.

Great article. That's what cats are for. Farmers and the ancients like Egyptians understood that.

In NYC this would never be allowed. I know of an open market which has a rodent problem. A suggestion was cats by NYC Health Dept rules forbid animals by food areas. They were told to use exterminators. Poison is so much more environmental and safer.

Historically, man and cat have had a symbiotic relationship. Cats were, AFAIK, the only wild animals to choose to become partially domesticated. In exchange for proximity to warm fires, a little food, and a small level of protection against predators that didn't want to come too close to man/fire, cats helped by keeping down vermin populations. And as BG9 hinted, they were used by the ancient Egyptians as guards, jumping on the backs of intruders and clinging painfully (for the robbers) until help arrived.

But there are many types of cat personality. I know my four would be pitiful as security guards. Like humans, it's best to suit the cat to the job!
