Kohl's to Close 18 Stores this Year

As Walmart discovered when they attempted to launch an online presence, Amazon continues to eat brick and mortar retailers for lunch.  I get things on Amazon I couldn't find anywhere else, among them a Sony Walkman and a book bone.  However, I loved making my little trips down to the Kohl's on Route 22 West in Watchung.  They carry 100 percent cotton nightgowns, the only things I can sleep in.  Amazon carries them too.

I hope Kohl's in Blue Star Watchung stays open.  Kohl's is great for big bargains when you get the 30% coupon.   I especially love Vera Wang clothes.

@DottyParker,

I was able to find nice 100% cotton nightgowns for my mother at, surprisingly, Kmart. (And also saw some just this week at JCPenney).

I went to kohls for the first time last week and was unimpressed. I can buy the same stuff cheaper with a coupon at Macy's or Lord & Taylor. Maybe I just didn't hit it on a sale day. It felt like a Sears to me from a layout, quality & price perspective.

My Mom liked Kohls, sort of mini Macy's (which was too large and probably overwhelming as her vision deteriorated), and it was easy for her to get in and out.  But I can't say that I understood what their unique selling proposition is/was.  Not a bad store, but why?  Hope they're remaining stores are successful.

Wednesdays is senior day at Kohl's.  15 percent off every Wednesday for those 60 and older.

My friend takes coupons to senior day and says they almost pay him to take the stuff out of the store.

I have never been in one.

We go to Koh's for things like all cotton tee-shirts, sweats and jeans and summer shorts for my husband. There are almost always coupons, and if you don't go in with them, they will give you some at the register when you check out. Anyone know which stores they are closing?

I have not used Sears or Walmart for years, since Sears stopped selling high quality appliances. And I have never liked Kmart.

I haven't been inside of Sears for years.  I was a regular customer of their vacuum cleaner department and would religiously take my vacuum to the Livingston store for repairs.  Suddenly that service went south and customer service cratered.  My last two vacuums were purchased from Amazon; neither of them were Kenmore, the Sears' brand.  I also liked Sears for nightgown and underwear.  The last time I went shopping at the Sears, it had already morphed into the land that time forgot.  The biggest disappointment was Land's End.  I was a true LE's fan.  I loved the whole idea of outerwear that could keep you warm at frigid temperatures; the catalogs would even have a temperature number.  I still have a Land's End parka I bought that guranteed warmth at 5 degrees.  It really does.  Sears spun off Land's End and the outerwear went the way of all flesh.  I still wear a jacket I got 13 years ago.

I hate Sears.  I occasionally go in to return a Lands End bathing suit I ordered on line.  Cheap, crummy clothes, everything looks like a mess with things too close together, dim lighting- that was how I felt about Kohls minus the messy part- it was neat but similar array of junky clothes or brands I could buy elsewhere for same or cheaper price.

Is cotton hard to find?  I shop for clothes mainly at Macys or Lord and Taylor and never have a problem finding cotton items when I need them.  And I feel I get better prices than Kohls or marshalls or TJ Maxx or Target as long as I shop carefully and use a coupon.  And the quality is much higher.

I like Kohl's okay. I've bought a few things there I really love, including a dress and a few Lauren Conrad tops (who knew?). But their website is godawful to navigate. I don't have a lot of time to shop in person so I prefer to browse online and try on at home and then just make returns. But it's a really unpleasant online shopping experience so I rarely do it.

Off the Kohls topic, but one of the things that annoys me most about the Lands End/Sears partnership is that if you return an online order to the store, your credit does not process until it is returned to LE headquarters - so sometimes 7 days plus the 1-3 days for the credit to appear. I feel like if they sell the clothes in store, you should be able to return in store without waiting so long to get your money back. Especially since they only carry a small fraction of the line in physical stores to try on.

Back to Kohls, I read that this is very much media hype - 18 stores is a very small percentage of their total, and represents a normal amount of closures of underperforming stores.

How many stores does Kohl's have? It's true 18 is nothing like the 50 that Sears is cutting.

I just read an article and it says Kohls has 1,160 stores nationwide, 38 of which are in NJ.   The list of locations supposedly will be released at the end of March.

I'm not surprised.  All the clothing looks the same.  The last time I was there, I asked about an item in their sale brochure, the saleswoman said it didn't look familiar to her and walked away.
