I'm finally next on the list for exterior painting and suggestions are still welcome.

My house is an American foursquare, and looks more or less like the one in the picture below, except that it has stucco siding. It is currently painted a very pale yellow, and Hawthorne Yellow is a color I like a lot. The new roof is charcoal. If it matters, the nearby neighbors are beige, tan, white and white.

Suggestions for trim color? Other ideas about the exterior?

Should shingle dormers be painted to match the stucco walls, or should they be their own color?

Should the decorative eave brackets be painted a different color?

For the door, I think I'd like Blue Nose.

Hawthorne Yellow it is.

I think a true white looks better than a creamy white for the trim.

For the eave brackets, I tried Cypress Green, and it's too green. I need a gray-based khaki that goes well with a gray-based yellow. Suggestions?

Powerwashing was pretty brutal on most wood trim, but uncovered beautiful wood on the deck on the north side of the house, which gets mossy.

I know this is not real helpful but we have had VERY good results using the Benjamin Moore iPhone app called "Color Capture."
You simply photograph something you like color-wise (a pair of khaki pants, a napkin, a piece of stationery) and the app generates a palette of 6 stock paint colors that you can choose from. We found the perfect red just this week.

Have you looked at BM Olive Branch?

@j_r, you can also ask the nice folks at Ricciardi to let you borrow their huge color fan/wheel/ book thing. They lent it to me for 24 hours last week.

For our exterior we also did mock up samples using blank foamcore-like boards sold at the paint store. Colors look VERY different out in full-spectrum sunlight!

So true! One white (Snow Something) looks gray-blue and the other (Elephant Tusk) is yellow in outdoor light.

Also look at the color boards on all exposures of your house. The color may look very different when put on a north facade as opposed to a south facade.

I'm getting nothing done at work because of Color Capture.

My pants are Athens Blue! My eyes are Chimichurri!

I think I've settled on Revere Pewter as the khaki accent. Now I just have to choose from one of the thousands of shades of "white."

I actually went with just BM White for the (inside) trim so I would remember what it was when I had to repaint!

Full disclosure, we used the plain white - as in the base white - as our trim color.
Initially I was horrified at its starkness but now, 10 months later, it has mellowed and it looks just about right. Much like a new pair of white Jack Purcell's I suppose!

I've been looking at similar tones and really like white dove (OC-17). Haven't seen it on the actual house yet though. Was planning to do simpliy white but worried it might be too stark. Inside the house I use decorators white on all trim.
