Inside Out - I just didn't get it

Clever? Yes. Funny? Not very. Entertaining? Eh. A one note song that could have been a short. Obviously I'm in the minority, given the reviews. Who else has seen it?

Our son (four) didn't seem to get it either.

"Why was the red man so angry?"

Saw it twice, loved it both times. I don't think it's a good movie for little kids. Too long and little kids don't get the emotional aspects. Both times I saw it, the little kids in the audience were fiddling and wanting to leave well before the end. I'd say maybe six and up.

Totally enjoyed it ... and my 10 year old daughter was in tears several times during the movie.

Some of the things I enjoyed most were 'around' the movie, like the thank you for going to the movies clip from the director I thought that was very 'old school' and I think it speaks to an older understanding of cinema maybe they aren't always meant to be 'got' but sometimes just experienced and I really think Inside Out was a valuable movie experience. I also loved the Lava short film before the movie.

My 10-year-old daughter and I both cried! Agree that it's probably not the best choice for little kids.

The preceding short film was one of the weirder cinematic experiences I've had...

The lava short film got me in tears !! I'm such a cry baby ... but i like it wink

I took my 5 year old to see it and she enjoyed it very much! she understood each emotion .. but one of her favorite characters is the pink elephant ( i know too cute ). My little one sings the "bing bong" song a lot !! I get it, its a catchy song.

The other day I went to buy her sad and disgust (her favorite characters) and they are pretty sold out!

I personally like the movie and my girls (5 & almost 3) seemed to enjoyed it.

i was in tears laughing at the end when the credits were coming up and they showed what a cat and dog things !! hahahahahahaha ....

Thanks for reminding me. Hated the Lava short too! Maybe I'm just too old and crusty.

It's for girls so we'll pass. I plopped my boys down to watch Frozen and they started asking for Blaze and the Monster Machine about 10 minutes in.

Frozen, perhaps, but Inside Out less so. Besides which, it's not a bad idea to encourage cross-gender appreciation when it comes to movies and literature. Girls are generally willing to read books with male protagonists, while boys are generally very reluctant to read books with female protagonists. That's a shame, but hopefully it's a situation that's gradually changing, especially as stronger female characters become more commonplace.

I don't think it's solely for girls at all. My 9-year-old son enjoyed it very much. I enjoyed it too. It didn't live up to the ridiculous hype and glowing reviews, but even a decent Pixar film is far better than most. I laughed the most during the end credits when the voices inside the boy's head started freaking out when the girl spoke to him.

"Inside Out" definitely better for slightly older kids who are starting to write stories themselves and working with exploring different angles around a concept. That said, little kids still have bright colors, silly characters and amusement park-type environments to respond to.

That "Lava" short was beneath both Disney and Pixar standards. Disney stories always make sense within their reality, and Pixar animation always tries to pay attention to details. The Lava short failed primarily because an underwater mountain builds up because lava spills over the top and adds to the height of the mountain. If the short followed those rules, the mountains' faces would have been covered in lava. Also the song was cloyingly terrible, which is also beneath Disney and Pixar standards. It was a lazy effort.

My son and I liked it. As for the female aspect, no big deal with him. And for the record- Brave is always watched over Frozen any dayoh oh

We all loved Inside Out. 5 yr old boy, 8 yr old girl both loved it. I thought it was clever and different and beautiful. There's never a gender issue with them and movies. We all love movies and enjoy Cinderella as much as Avengers (both of which they also loved)

And neither of them have much tolerance for Frozen.

People don't have to love every movie, but my 5 yr old son & 3 yr old daughter loved Inside Out - and have referenced it since. 'uh-oh Goof-ball Island is taking over!' and 'sadness is in charge' etc. My son didn't think at all that it was a girl film - loved the hockey (now thinks that he'll be great at hockey now when he's 11 - because that's how old Reilly was). Way more conversations with them about this film than about almost anything else they've watched. Not to say that you have to get the same thing out of it or that everyone will be as thrilled by it as I was, but I wouldn't write it off as not good for little kids or not for boys at all.

Brave was definitely better than Frozen.
