In-Home Dog Trainers? archived

We need a little extra bark and people training for our (otherwise obviously perfect) dog. For some reason Bark Busters isn't getting back to us. Anyone have any other Maplewood-local recommendations?
St Huberts will come to your home but it is not cheap.

We, and several of our friends, have used Ralph Fabbo and highly, highly recommend him. He is quite strict and doesn't believe in using treats to reward dogs, but is a very nice guy and a fantastic trainer.

Won't help with the people training but we used a bark collar years ago for our dog. Worked like a charm. The worst part was getting it tuned so the dog could vocalize without getting popped. Took about a day to get it set right and then another two days for the nuisance barking to go away. Couldn't afford a trainer back then.

I like Ralph so much! Mr. Fabbo is all business and a really nice guy. Very responsive too!!

Obviously a family connection, but I am always impressed with the pooches Keri Siry trains- she's an MOL advertiser.

This is on the business page of MOL. Don't know anything about her...

Ha, you beat me to it!

@cats - She likes cats, too! grin

Cats cannot be trained!

I highly recommend local trainer Sara Matters (of Training Matters): (973) 699-3088

I know an amazing trainer! Mike Lustig in West Orange

He trained John Stewart's dog

Seconded. Unfortunately, Sara wasn't able to do much for our very troubled dog, but we loved working with her. Her approach is very humane and attuned to the dog's needs, and her manner is easygoing and personable. I'd work with her again in a heartbeat.

Wow! My 3 week old thread finally comes alive! Thanks everyone!

You are going to have the most highly trained dog in the history of mankind. It will be able to fly a Harrier by the time you're done.

You needed to have a more sensational title.

That would be sweet! But I'll settle for one who doesn't scare the ***** out of my friends whenever they come to the house.

Might I suggest: Dog Trainer to Visit Home in 50-Story Maplewood Post Office Building

Like it!

Maybe I should have tried this.

"This nerd needed his crazy dog trained in his own home... You'll be AMAZED at what happened next!"

I would have gone with.... "I think my dog may be racist. Please help." or "My dog wants to buy a gun."

Well, after all that, thanks to the help of a friendly MOLer, Bark Busters got back to us after all, so we're giving him a try. Thanks for all the suggestions, though, as I'm sure Ms. Cooper who bumped this back into existence appreciates them all.

Indeed I do. Thanks to all for the great suggestions!

I called Fern (real name is Fernando) back in January to have him come out for a private consultation to deal with a couple of issues that we were having with our beagle and he was great!. He does not subscribe to any one particular method of training as he believes that it really depends on the dog, the owner and the severity of the issue. I would say that primarily he wants the dog to learn to eventually make good choices on their own through consistent training teaching them self control and how to settle themselves down in stimulating situations. He has a "calm, assertive" energy about him and was very good with our dog and in communicating with me as well. I continue to do our "homework" and am happy with the results. Definitely check out his website since he has a few videos on there where you can get a good sense of his beliefs about dog training/personality and whether you think he would be the right fit for you and your dog. Feel free to pm if you have questions about the specifics of our training!
