If you were born in the late 1950s/early 1960s - what toys did you play with? archived

I'm putting together sort of an odd Christmas gift for my brother and his wife. I realized how much fun it was to get an old view-master view and slide reels because I loved them as a kid. I saw one in an antique center one day and got it - It's just a fun thing to have even as an adult. (Looking at the old NASA/1960s space program stuff in stereoscope is beyond fun.)

So, I bought my brother an old Erector Set from the late 50s. He's studied engineering, so he's probably going to actually tinker with it and have some fun.

Now, I'm trying to think of a fun vintage kid gift kind of thing I could get his wife, who is about the same age as my brother, born in 1958 or 1959.

I got them something else that's "adult" so I'm not just giving them old toys, but would love to find something fun that my sister-in-law may have played with as a kid or would bring back memories/be fun to have.

Any great toys you played with as a kid that you'd actually find fun to come across again now as an adult?
Tinker Toys
Brick Builders
Lincoln Logs

(do you detect a trend here?)

Ha! I loved Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs too! Used to build a bunch of cabins with Lincoln Logs and play "Army" with my brother using little plastic army men. grin

Rockem Sockem Robots, Matchbox cars, prizes from cereal boxes (Winnie the Pooh).

edited to add - here are some more (slinky, etch-a-sketch, etc.):

I saw that! That's what prompted me to get on the horn and do a little investigating! LOL!

hot wheels with the yellow tracks and loop de loops we would build a track through the whole house and ay for hours

PS - ebay is a dangerous place... I'm afraid I might end up buying something for myself....

Hot wheels are an awesome idea - my cousins used to have a collection I envied.

Great! I can't find my original source but if you need it I'll keep looking.

If this is for the wife, I played with mr. Potato head, a spool yarns thingy, paper doll and cut out clothes, pot holder maker, howdie doodle puppet, pink Spalding ball for hit the stick and Russia against a wall, pogo stick, candy land,...

My friend and I were going to start a business making the pot holders. We pre-sold them for a quarter each to the women on our street, but only made one. No one ever said anything, as I recall..LOL

Ooooh Mr. Potato Head... I like that.

I think I had a Tammy Doll or something similar. I remember my mom knitted clothes for it! (We also had a Chatty Cathy doll floating around our house too.)

Klik Klak
Footsie

This is fun!

ETA: I just googled Klik Klak to see if they are still around, and all that came up was some sort of sleeper couch! Anyway, can you imagine some toymaker trying to put out the Klick Klak now? The CPSC would never approve of it! If it hit you in the head it could kill you!

I know... I'm having a lot of fun thinking about this stuff!

I had to google Klik Klak - We definitely had that thing too!

This is the Klik Klak that I meant:

There's some other toy called klik klak that comes back on a google search that is something completely different.

Yes! Definitely! (Hi wolfie!)

And jump rope!

Oh - shoshannah - We had that thing you found in google, but I also had that thing in the video. I can't believe they bought that for me - I had to put foam padding around my arms to keep from getting whacked by it.

How hard would it be to find a needle for this thing?
