If you reset a MacBook to factory specs...

...do you lose all your files? Having a display problem (flickering and odd colors). It was suggested that I reset to factory specs.

No, it affects settings in the non-volatile RAM which is on the logic board (aka motherboard), not anything in the hard drive storage (or solid state storage).
