Is he starting a sincere write-in campaign?

It's too late to get his name on ballot, but he can still be written in at the booth.

I have little hope this write in campaign will succeed. That said I intend to write-in Gerard W Ryan. For me it is a protest vote.

I think it's important to see first if it's something he actually wants before we spend our vote?

He ran in the primary and was defeated. This would suggest that he wants another term.

Just fot perspective, here are the vote totals from the primary:

Lembrich 1552
Adams 1526
Ryan 841

The devastatingly handsome and charming Mr Ryan would have an uphill climb to mount a successful write-in campaign. I'm not saying he can't do it, but I think a website and social media presence would need to be happening already. As well as Saturday/Sunday morning handshakes and babykissing.

If he starts this now he won't be able to hang out at the Irvington Ave beer festival with me next week. So I have mixed feelings.

Craft Beer fest should be the first write-in campaign event. Lots of hands to shake there.

I think a lot of people are fed up with the highly questionable tactics of Lemrich's supporters. And given the chance to distance himself from them (which it appeared he might do for a while) he has instead doubled down on the insanity. I don't think this is going to make a difference in the election, but it'll send a message. I will not be so bold as to use his supporters hyperbole and say that it's a "referendum".

It will definitely send a message, so not wasted no matter what the outcome, to my way of thinking.

I've seen statements (opinions?) both ways re the necessity of writing the name correctly and consistently for the vote to count. (i.e. Jerry/Gerry/Gerard, middle initial or not.) Any wisdom on that point?

My understanding is that the voter's intent needs to be clear. Given that we have a TC member named Gerard W. Ryan who goes by the name Jerry Ryan, either should be sufficient to count. Similarly, an election board would probably also accept Gerald Ryan, or Gerry Ryan. But if you can spell the name correctly, it certainly makes it easier for everyone involved. If by some miracle, the combination of Gerard/Gerry/Gerald/Jerry Ryan won by write-in, I think we might be looking at a lawsuit by the loser.

I'm writing in for Jerry. Not that I think he'll win, but even 300-400 write ins would send Lembrich a message that at least a few hundred people have been turned off by his campaign thus far and will have their eyes on him. My beef with him now is that he is still opposing the Post House, and from what I can gather from his statement, it's because of the notion that it's a "McBuilding" that doesn't fit. I don't expect Lembrich to like the look of the building. But at this point, given that we've gone through a long process of public meetings, plans, volunteer input, review by the MVA and PB, I would have hoped a candidate for public office would stop opposing the project now. Even if that person didn't personally like the proposed building, I would have hoped that he respects the lawful process that got us there.

Agreed. I don't think we want or need a yes person in office who will automatically agree with others on TC and in the most vocal elements of their constituency; but, I do think we need elected officials who know how to make an independent analysis of the issues under consideration and work within the system to get things done. Part of that is the willingness and ability to either compromise in the formation of a group decision or register a protest no vote on the record without looking to derail what others have worked so hard to put together. Unlike the South Mountain Dam Proposal which would have been severely detrimental to the town and surrounding communities, the architectural style of a single building will not have the power to destroy Maplewood

Has anyone asked Jerry whether he supports a write-in campaign? Honest question. Whether he wants to be written in may not matter to some, but it will to others.

If you ask Jerry he will probably tell you that he is not interested in a write-in campaign. That does not matter to me. I have a vote and intend to use it. I do not favor the present candidates so I will write in GERARD W RYAN.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski lost the Primary by 2000 votes and then won the Election as a write-in by 10,000 votes. That was a State-wide election and Murkowski is much more difficult to spell than Ryan.

This will be a low turnout election. The highest office being voted upon is State Assembly. Also on the ballot will be Sheriff and County Clerk. Aside from the fact that hardly anyone cares who the Sheriff or County Clerk is this is an overwhelmingly Democratic District so there will not be much of a fight over the State Assembly positions currently held by Mila Jasey and John McKeon.

There is a Board of Ed Election that may bring out voters but that is a big "may".

A concerted write-in campaign is very difficult but given all circumstances it can succeed.

You could probably order some business cards with Jerry's name printed on them to hand to voters on the way into the poll site. Just maintain the proper distance.

You write the same name in only once. However, you can bullet vote, not use your second vote to support one of the other candidates. In this situation, a bullet vote can serve to increase the write-in candidate's chances of being elected.

consider that a bullet write in vote for Jerry may possibly hurt Nancy Adams more than the other candidate

Shouldn't that read candidates? Last I looked, the Republican nominee was still on the ballot.

So, if there are two seats, we could write-in one candidate and vote for one on this list, right?

So why are we "saving" Gerard W Ryan? Why should we write his name on the ballot?

Those of us planning on writing in Gerard W Ryan for TC are doing so because we firmly believe that he has done an exceptionally fine job on the TC and would be an asset to the town going forward.
