I started with the $3 plan, which came with a free month when I bought the new printer. Then, because of a flurry of copying, I increased the monthly fee to $5.99 after a surcharge two months in a row. Figured it was cheaper than continuing to get the surcharge. My copying has tapered off quite a bit lately, so I will be reducing my monthly amount. They did send a set of colors, and then a black ink cartridge. But because things slowed down so much, it was months before I needed to install new cartridges. They are sent back postage paid for recycling.
If you're a member of Costco and your printer ink is one of the types they can refill, I highly recommend this service. Way cheaper than buying new cartridges.
I've had this for about 2 years and it works beautifully for me. I costed it out and it is much less per year than I would pay to go out and buy my own cartridges at Staples. I always have ink on hand when I need it, and I can adjust my monthly subscription according to how many pages I'm using. I like it and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Any place is cheaper than Staples! Staples is there for convenience, not price.
When our HP DeskJet died after 8 years of faithful service, I decided "no more ink drama". I got an Epson EcoTank printer. It cost more than $200 which is high for an inkjet, but it comes with ink bottles that hold enough ink for 4,000 pages. So I haven't paid for ink since and I haven't had "ink anxiety" - the worry that you're about to run out of ink and you don't have a spare cartridge.

Our printer cacked off. Looking at a new one, and instead of buying a cheap printer that needs $75 refills we were thinking of buying based on the cost of the refills even if the printer cost s bit more. Them someone suggested the HP ink plan where they charge you $3 per month, and mail out refills when your ink gets low.
Has anyone used this, and are they happy with the plan?
