How to polish silver and turquoise jewelry?

Should I take the pieces to a jeweler or is it something I could (safely) do at home?

They are native American cuff bracelets and necklaces. Pretty intricate stuff that we would like to wear again but they have darkened with tarnish.

There's a trick w silver foil, baking soda and boiling water I believe. Will try to find info

I've just always used the silver polishing cloths and rubbed gently......for a long time. I remember reading that turquoise is a soft and fairly porous stone, so you don't want to use anything that might damage it. I'll check some other sites and see if I see any recommendations for you.

Here's what they say on a site for Native American jewelry: Natural turquoise is a beautiful stone that is porous so use caution when caring for and cleaning turquoise jewelry. Protect turquoise from extreme temperatures, cosmetics, perfumes, skin oils, grease, or any other harsh chemicals, as they might discolor the stone. When cleaning turquoise jewelry, use a very soft brush or a slightly damp soft cloth. Do not submerge turquoise in water and avoid using commercial jewelry cleaners, ultrasonic cleaners, chemicals or even soap. A polishing cloth is another safe way to clean or polish turquoise.

Cody, thank you. That's what I imagined needed to be done. It sounds like a time-consuming process without any possible short cuts. Perhaps a jeweler has a motorized buffing machine but that might be too vigorous.

When they lived in New Mexico, my MIL used to wear pieces of this jewelry daily - as a result it never needed polishing.

I love it, too. I know you can store it in the small, individual seal plastic bags but I've never gotten around to doing that. The pieces I wear often are OK without it and the others, I just buff with the cloth before I wear them.
