How to find out status of an empty house in Maplewood?

Click the link that says "Essex County Tax Record Search." On the form that comes up, select Maplewood under "district" and type the street name under "location." It's a typical govt records site, so probably at least a few months out a date, buggy, etc. But it should give you a name and an address for the current or recent owner, whether the owner is local, and a sense of whether the property has changed hands frequently, etc.

Does anyone know how to track down the status of a property that is obviously empty and in disrepair? I'm curious about a property near me but don't know where to start to learn more since it does not appear to be for sale. The next door neighbor is pretty sure that it is not in foreclosure, but it has that look about it.
