House Valuation?

Unfortunately, when the unidentified KW Real Estate Agent called the house while we were sitting Shiva to ask if the house was for sale - it is not - my DIL who answered the phone was too shocked by the call to ask how we would go about getting the needed house value for estate purposes.  If any of the realtors reading this post could direct me as to how to get this done, I would deeply appreciate it.  I have the town-assessed value but that won't do it apparently since current value as of end of December 2015 is needed.  TIA.

Joan, that's horrible. If you need help finding an awesome local agent names, please reach out. As a mortgage professional, I work with many of them and can certainly advise who is who.

You can cross KW off your list anyway.

Joan - The IRS requires that the valuation for estate tax purposes be done a certified real estate appraiser. I used a certified appraiser several years ago for a property tax appeal, but can't locate his number right now. If I find it, I'll post it.

If you have an attorney assisting you with estate issues, I would consult them first before hiring anyone to value your home.

Or your accountant.

Accountant said any real estate broker should be able to do this.  Valuation is needed for estate purposes not necessarily IRS.  Thank you to the MOL poster who has already offered to do this.

In this instance estate and IRS are the same thing.  Speak to the attorney.

Experiencing the same issues in Pennsylvania right now.   So far the valuations we have gotten for the house,  house content, car etc have been accepted by our attorney for his use in estimating Estate taxes.   Ironically the only problems so far are with a number of cemetery plots my Uncle owned

here in Jersey   The cemetery is clinging to the information I need as if they were State secrets

Handed the matter back to my attorney this morning

when my father died, my mother had the valuation for the estate done by the same real estate agent who has listed it for sale now, 14 years later. Realtors can do this. But I would report that KW person to someone who can make them hurt for it. So damn creepy and unkind.

Perhaps it was a bad coincidence?  I periodically get calls from agents asking if I am interested in selling.  Did they reference your recent loss?

Maybe, but I really doubt it.  Morally bankrupt predators have long been known to utilize the obits as a routine practice.

Could be a coincidence.  We get those calls from time to time as well.  Still, the timing really upset my DIL.

Huge thanks to the MOLer who is already working on the valuation and promised to get it to me quickly.

Joan, I'm sorry for your loss. I have used a certified appraiser on local valuation tasks. He actually lives in Maplewood and is quite reasonable. If you PM me, I'll share the contact information.

Thank you.  I received information that the valuation has been done.  I should receive it shortly.

Glad it has been handled, and so easily and quickly. oh oh
