sad.

From what I heard this morning on the news I immediately assumed a carjacking. Very sad no matter what the reason.

It's horrible. My cousin was good friends with him and is devastated.

My nephew as well - he went to the Prep?

Yes, I believe so. My husband thinks his father was the dean at Seton Hall.

I cannot imagine their disbelief, shock and grief. My heart breaks for these people. It is very frightening to think that could have happened to any of us.

Not to discount the frightening and horrible nature of this, but the nj.com article states:
"The preliminary investigation has determined that Tevlin was targeted, authorities said."

What does "targeted" mean? Why would he be targeted?

I take it to mean that it wasn't random, and that the shooter knew him. Awful.

I read he was driving the same kind of car as the MASH carjacking, so maybe he was targeted for that?

That's what I thought when I saw them putting the vehicle on the flatbed.

The second nj.com article states that he was found in a car. So it seems unlikely he was targeted for a carjacking.

This is really horrible.

Can we please skip the speculation? Seems totally inappropriate.

Seems natural, really. Unpleasant and insensitive, to be sure, but everyone has an agenda, whether it's attempting to make a point about our upcoming elections in WO (no one here is attempting to do that, but on other sites for sure), or whether it's simply an attempt to reassure oneself this couldn't have been a random robbery and that we're all generally safe ... you can't stop speculation.

No you can't. But you can object to it, and resist the temptation to publicly do it yourself.

This is the son of a man I went to CHS with. A well known Maplewood family.

They need our thoughts and prayers. So incredibly sad.

Oh crap. I was afraid of that. We looked at their house in the mid 90s. I'm so sickened by this tragedy.

How horrible is this? It's no more or less horrible than the murders that happen every day in our cities, but the fact that so many people here knew him or knew him peripherally, makes it very sad.

Yes, exactly, too close to home in many ways.

this is just terrible. Just terrible. I am thinking so much of this family.

Absolutely heartbreaking.

Tevlin, only 19, was found fatally wounded in his family's 4X4 Land Rover at 275 Northfield Avenue from multiple gunshot wounds. The homicide, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, was "targeted." The investigation is active and ongoing.

It really puts things into perspective. My heart goes out to Brendan and all of his family and friends. They're in my thoughts and prayers.

So was this a car jacking?

Based on news reports until now, the police do not seem to think so.

The Star Ledger reports that he was in a Jeep Liberty. Not a Land Rover.

I only point that out because I know people are wondering if this is related to carjackings focused on Land Rovers.

carjacking was the last thing I thought. usually a carjacker takes the car.

Senseless. My heart goes out to his family.

Major condolences to Mr. Tevlin's family and many friends. Incredibly tragic.

I hope the hand of justice strikes quickly and aggressively at the cowardly perpetrators of this crime.
