Homeowners Insurance and dog breed - help

I was going over my HO policy since its up for renewal and my car insurance company asked if they could give me a quote for multi-policy discounts. I was speaking with my agent and they asked if I had a dog. I said yes. She's a mixed breed. Now I am freaking out that perhaps we are going to get dinged for her. No idea what breed she is made of and I know those DNA tests aren't accurate.

Any advice?

Some insurance companies ask about breed, others just ask about bite history. If you will post a picture, we will help you come up with a breed mix that won't be on the banned-breed list. grin

I think mixed breeds get a pass as long as you didn't mention the "P" word. The list of "aggressive' breeds is pretty long and includes dogs you wouldn't even think of so I wouldn't bother with DNA. Sometimes they just go off the weight of the dog. I don't think you will get hit much if at all.

"Breed? 100% American Mutt. No clue."

Ooh oh

When in doubt say terrier. It covers many breeds including pitbulls.

I wouldn't purposely leave out any breed you know is in the background. If there is an issue and the claimant asserts that your dog is part pitbull, the insurance company may look into it and if they can show there is pitbull in the mix, deny the claim.

Its one thing if you honestly don't know or don't suspect what the breeds are...but don't risk outlying lying about anything you do know.

This is my girl. She's about 60-ish pounds.

Got a message from the agent....let's see what she says. Honestly, I know plenty of small dogs that are nippy. This girl- no way. She is protective of her property and is well trained

Sure looks like a yellow lab mix to me.

My homeowner's insurance required a vet certification of what the "mix" was in Shepherd mix. My old vet, who raised Collies, said : I'm sorry my dear, I know you don't have one drop of Collie blood in you, but now you will be known as a Collie-Shepherd.

Your girl looks like a Lab/Boxer mix to me cheese(secretly, I think she has some Shepherd mixed in,but that is a no-no)

Beautiful dog. I see Shepherd mix in her.

You'd think a homeowner would get some credit for having a dog -- one of the best burglar alarms and all-around early warning systems there is. Good luck -- she is a gorgeous creature!

calliope, I also see shepherd in the face, but you're correct that shepherds often appear in lists of banned breeds. My dog is a shepherd, so I've had to deal with that in the past when looking for rentals. Unfortunately, there's no hiding her shepherd-ness. The only breed she could possibly be mixed with is rottweiler, and that doesn't help the situation.

Let us know what transpires.... she looks sweet. (I just met the most adorable rottweiler last Sunday! Sweetest disposition and friendly.)

My little bischion has to be locked away when workers come over, as she'll attack them.

The worst thing my dog has done to a worker at our place is steal his cowboy hat when he put it downoh oh

Funny, they didn't ask if I had any firearms in the house. Wouldn't that be a good question to ask...not that I do.

The insurance company I use (don't recall the name) bans pits, german shepherds, rottweilers, chows, dobermans, great danes, and any mixes of the aforementioned breeds. I believe there were a few more breeds on the list, but I don't recall the names.

I only went with them so as to get the house insured for the mortgage, I meant to change to a more dog friendly company after the closing. It's been 12 years and I still haven't gotten around to it yet. Sigh....

You would think right? Perhaps they are not allowed to ask?

I do see my dog as a secondary alarm along with our system. Still haven't heard back from the company. I'll call again since this is bothering me now.
