We used Top Notch for the house we just purchased, and I can't recommend them enough. Jim, our inspector, was fabulous, super thorough, very patient, just a pleasure to work with.
Thanks all -- not a lot of consensus, huh?!
I liked the last company I used -- I thought the home inspection was very good but the report lacking. Much of what he said didn't translate to the report at all.
Another point about inspections -- the house I'm looking to buy has several broken and uneven sidewalk slabs. Called town hall, which said they have to be in good shape for the CO. So since that involved permits and concrete work, kind of need to know that really soon in the process so the sellers can take care of that.
My last inspected house didn't have any sidewalks -- do home inspectors typically note that? SHould I just call town hall and ask for an inspector to come?

Not accurate. I know somebody who got a violation notice from the Village within months of purchasing a home and getting a CCO. Don't rely on it. I was advised that the Village only looks at sidewalks in response to complaints.
I have heard great reviews for Tom Dabb and from many folks. I ended up not needing his services but he was pleasant and courteous speaking by phone with me when discussing my home inspection needs.
i have used some suggested here with great disappointment
I used Compass Home Inspection on my last/current home and he did a better job-- Robert Ruggiero - although some of the issues he highlighted were not issues when i called in contractors he did a decent job (
Also find an HONEST chimney guy as most inspectors dont do chimney
Glad I didn't see the guy that inspected my house for my buyers listed here so far. What a joker -- he listed several things that were simply not true and now I have to spend money to hire somebody to refute his allegations (if you don't know how to turn an oven on, you shouldn't be a home inspector). And no, I'm not going to list his name here -- don't need a cease and desist letter with everything that's going on!
We also used someone recommended here that we would not use again. Missed asbestos which should've been obvious to him.
So -- zeroed on in a house! yea! OMG!
Need an inspector with slate roof expertise -- thanks for the help!
Pete
Inspectors won't look at slate roofs You'll need to get a roofer who does slate to check it out
