Help on Buying A Mattress Online For Son Who Just Moved To LA (and needs asap!)

My son just moved to LA and has found a place to rent so needs to get a mattress asap. Since he does not have a car to transport the mattress we are looking at online options. This needs to be a fairly inexpensive purchase and I am clueless of where to start my search. If you have experience with this I would love your input!

I thought delivery was a pretty standard option when buying a mattress, usually about $50. I wouldn't buy a mattress without trying it first.

Yes, trying out the mattress first would be the best option but because he does not have a car, begins work in 2 days and needs this asap online is our option at this point. I'm looking for input from people who have gone this route and been happy with the product they ordered.

My daughter bought a memory foam mattress and bed frame from Amazon for her college apartment at a very reasonable price and has been happy with it. (She already knew she liked memory foam.)

He can sleep on the floor on an air mattress for a few days until the weekend or next day off from work when he can get to a store to try one out. Buying a mattress on-line is a bad plan. It's not a urgent as you think it is. (And, if he's old enough to move to CA and be starting a job, he's probably old enough to figure out how to get to a store and buy a mattress).

1-800-mattres....

most places would take days to deliver anyway so he may end up sleeping on the floor

walmart has a very cheap air mattress

I'll have to check tomorrow, but I think there's a record of the order in her amazon account

Casper Mattresses was recently highlighted on a national news program--delivery right to your door, free returns, high satisfaction rates.

Have him go to Macy's and pick out the mattress he likes. You can then buy it on-line or phone and have Macy's deliver it. We did this for our cottage on Cape Cod. We picked it out in the store here, and had it delivered by the store in MA.

When I left my ex-husband I didn't have a bed (or any other furniture) so I went the 800-Mattres route. It worked out just fine. In fact, I loved that bed.

We went through almost exactly this scenario two months ago. We purchased the mattress in Sleepy's in Vauxhall and had it delivered from their California warehouse to local address in San Francisco. No problem.

By the way, there is another current thread about buying mattresses that is filled with good information and suggestions.

That's a good thought... I didn't know Sleepy's offered that service.

To all those who think that buying mattresses online is a bad idea I will just say that we had an excellent experience with Saatva (and you can read multiple great reviews online). I've also heard great things about Casper. Saatva isn't an immediate delivery as they are made to order

I don't see why buying online would be so bad. If you have a clear idea of the kind of mattress you sleep best on and stick to known brands, what's the problem?

If there is a problem with a mattress you aren't going to find out about it by lying on it in a showroom. But most places with online ordering have a pretty reasonable return policy.

If you know what type of mattress you like or have picked one out elsewhere and you are just buying it on-line, that's one thing. But for something as important as a mattress, I think you probably want to see it, feel it, lie down on it before buying it.

I think the Amazon mattress SAC is referring to is select comfort. They have a coil version and a memory foam version. The frame is a metal frame that does not need a box spring. I just ordered a full size frame for my daughter. Under $90 and it came in two days. The mattresses are under $200 and from what I read get good reviews. (We opted to get a 2inch memory foam mattress pad for over a futon for the time being.

Sorry, it's signature sleep. Link to the coil mattress is posted below.

its not that buying sight unseen is 'bad' its just that you don't know what the mattress feels like.....they might be amazing mattress..for someone else...I looked in a few stores for a mattress...and tried them all...would have never guessed by looking at them and reading descriptions which ones were too soft or too firm for me....and even if returns are 'easy' it is still a hassle to have to arrange it...and find another mattress..

is his old bed still in your house? lay on the bed..notice how firm/soft it is.....ask him if it was comfortable...and find something similar for him in a national store.....and order it to be delivered for him

Thanks everyone, great suggestions. Our biggest issue is that my son is using the bus/bide route for transportation so traveling to various stores to try out beds is difficult. I never thought about using Sleepy's here for delivery there. Macy's delivery is out to next week so while not an option, something to remember when we have more time. The amazon mattress shh mentioned is high on the list and with prime shipping a very quick delivery. And the Casper bed is exactly what we are looking for, just not the price! It is a lovely bed.

She got http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GTCL2FU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

(The price has gone up since she got it a little over a year ago.)

you could potentially find a mattress in a brick and mortar store and then try to find an online place that will deliver quickly with the same mattress...but some are labeled 'made especially for' a specific store
