The sink hole could also be due to the underground streams that run through some parts of town. I have heard that some of my neighbors have problems with this happening in their back yards. This is the first I have heard of the house itself being impacted; but, it is worth looking into as a possible cause.
If there was once a large tree in that area the decaying root structure could result in a large hole. We have a spot where a large cedar once stood and now holes are opening up and the area is sinking. I keep throwing soil and rocks in the holes. Fortunately it's not real close to our house.
I'd call the town and see if they'll come look at it before doing anything. That's pretty big.
I have one in my back yard, I called the town a few years ago and a guy came out to look at it, I think he was a town inspector. He told me that when they built some of these older houses, (mine was 1923) that the builders would often dig a big hole and bury some leftover building scraps in the yards.

We have a sinkhole about 3 ft deep and almost as wide right next to our house. We think it might be due to leaking tile drain eroding soil but that is just a guess. Who do we call to address this? Waterproofing Company? Anyone have this? What professional helped ?
