Hat City Kitchen archived

Hey folks, We have a new watering hole and restaurant in town ( or at least the next town over).
Hat City Kitchen, located at 459 Valley St in Orange NJ. For those familiar with the "Valley" area of Orange, the old "Ricci's in the Valley" building.

Hat City Kitchen, so named because Orange used to be home to the Stetson Hat Factory. If you are on the Mid-Town direct and pass the Highland Ave Station, look west and you will see a large white factory building. That used to be Stetson - supplying hats to the heads of the city. Orange was known as "Hat City".

HANDS - the Housing and Neighborhood Development Services, Inc http://www.handsinc.org/
has been taking abandoned and derelict buildings and renovating them for artist living and working lofts.
They have several arts rehabilitation groups that they work with, providing arts training to adults with disabilities. They have opened several galleries and are working with Luna Stage to create a theater. They have sponsored Daily Soup at the corner of Central Ave and Scotland Rd. Right across from the White Castle.

The most recent project to come to fruition is the Hat City Kitchen with a very talented chef preparing fabulous food for the dining hours.
At 9 pm on Friday and Saturday nights, live music starts, featuring many of the groups you know and love, and hopefully some that you will get to know.

This Saturday, January 30 dinner starts at 6 pm and the night's musical guests are The Reticents and The Five Cent Philosophers. Both bands are donating all earned money to the Red Cross for Haitian Relief. Please help us celebrate our newest space and help folks out with far more needs than our own. A $15 donation at the door. Stop by our Facebook page and become a fan.

I'm really wanting to try some of that food that is on the menu.

I'm curious, does the outside still look like the picture one can find on Google for that address, pretty good guess it doesn't, anyone know if it's possible to request and update with Google to drive down the street again?

mmmmm... jambalaya....

wow, after all these years around here, I didn't know about the hat-making in Orange, interesting

Monster, if you go to their website
http://www.hatcitykitchen.com
The opening page shows the way the building looks now.
I've been passing it for months bringing my daughter to preschool. Was wondering what it would be. This sounds so cool!!! Will definitely go!
Also, I think the owner is a neighbor of ours (I got a posting about the restaurant on another local loop I'm on) so that's yet another good reason to patronize the place.

The phrase "mad as a hatter" goes back to the days when hats were made using mercury as a curing agent, poisoning may of those involved in their manufacture... and I've always thought that Orange is home of some of NJ's craziest people (just watch 'em drive!), so, though I mourn the loss of Ricci's to Rte 10, I'm gonna be a regular at The Hat. See you there!

-s.

I've been to the web site, thought the splash page looked a little photoshopped

but let me be clear that it didn't really bother me, nor has it in any way dissuaded me from wanting to go check it out, also... it's all for a good cause.

Awww can't wait to try this place!

Place looks great on the outside, have passed it a few times in the last month or so. When the Stetson factory was there it was said that the creek ran brown from all of the dyes used in hat production.

Outside has been redone. Sign is up, though no neon yet. :-(
Inside is pretty cool. Had dinner there tonight. Had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken with honey pepper sauce, cornbread and collards on the side grin
My daughter had the plate of Angus Sliders and fries
Guinness, Harp and Magic Hat on tap.

Musicme1 - if you've got an "in" there, tell 'em their website looks nice BUT they've committed a cardinal sin: NO MUSIC ON A WEBSITE WITHOUT FIRST ASKING THE VISITOR IF THEY WANT TO HEAR IT!!! (imagine someone in their cubicle at work on a Friday afternoon, looking for a restaurant to go to that evening. They hit the Hat City Kitchen website and BAM! Everyone in the office gets a blast of that music... I've had that happen to me, and I never went back to those websites.

Also, the site shouldn't be opening a new window for every internal-to-the-site link, it should only do that for links off-site.

We had our first night of live music last night. Greased the wheels of the train to get it rolling.
Tonight - The Haiti Benefit.
I would recommend making reservations if you are interested in dinner.
Otherwise, the music starts at 9 pm. The Reticents and The Five Cent Philosophers.
We hope to see you.

We went last night and people definitely need to make reservations. We got there a little before 8 and there were no available tables but we ended up at the bar which was actually better as we wanted to see the band. There was quite a crowd and I don't think they've worked out all the kinks but the staff was enthusiastic and the place was busy. The drinks are reasonable and the place looks great. People should know the full menu is not available yet - they have a "Preview" menu.

We'll be back!

I cannot be-LIEVE how packed it was tonight!!! Congrats on an amazing event. I can't wait to hear the final tally for Haiti relief. The bands and the Hat City folks should all be really proud of (as well as applauded for) what they did tonight.

And what a great venue, in general. A great looking stage with terrific sound. I can't wait to get back there!!

Come back next Saturday, February 6th...

Whew! What a night! The Benefit for Haitian Releif was a blow out!
Capacity crowd, 2 great bands. Lovely response from everyone.
Thankyou Thankyou!

Yes it was some night. The place looks great, the food was delicious and the sound was terrific. Both bands played 2 excellent sets and the vibe was very positive. C'mon out and support this place, it's sorely needed in these parts.

great place. the bands were outstanding, the stage, lighting, and sound are first rate, and so was the food. it was like a big party. let's hope people come out like that every weekend.

Great Food, Great Atmosphere,Great Vibe, Great People... congrats, will def be a major hit in the area. P.S Try the ribs, amazing!

Friday night we'll have an open stage with some host musicians.
Saturday will be Walk the Dog and local faves, JuiceBox

Wo, this is YOUR place? Do I need to make a reservation for Valentines Day now? This is very cool.......

PS - Walk the Dog ROCKS (especially the sax player).

I. CAN'T. WAIT. TO. GO!!!!!

On nights without live music, is it kid-friendly? Like, high chairs, kids menu, etc? Some places are, some aren't, and either way is fine with us, just prefer to know ahead of time rather than just dropping in with them and finding out it would have been better to have saved it for a babysitter night.

Place looks cool. Is dancing allowed there? And is there a dance floor?

Ken, we like kids, but do not have a specific child menu, nor do we have high-chairs yet.
We have Mac 'n cheese and Sliders - (small burgers) and hot-dogs, but no chicken in the shape of dinosaurs grin

Can be a dance floor in front of the stage. Folks feel like dancing, we'll move the tables outta the way!
Not exactly a dance club, but if the spirit moves you, we will accommodate.

jaymon,
We had an incredible turnout this past weekend - served 230 dinners on Saturday night. We don't expect every weekend to be like that, but be safe rather than sorry. Call in a res.
