A doctor I visited once over 7 years ago closed down...i got a letter that my records were transferred to another doc.
As far as records, its good practice to keep copies of main records anyway...and review them yourself...i've had docs miss things on blood work..if i didn't see it myself, treatment would have been delayed even longer...also, you want to make sure things are noted in records. I found a doc didn't note something important once.

Apparently the office closed December-January without notice, which put her entire patient list in the dark (since my daughter is healthy, we didn't find out until recently when it was time to schedule an annual appointment). Dr. Cardwell relocated to Georgia, and Dr. Mary Cantey assumed her records (patients can obtain copies of their records for .75 per page).
