GEICO For Homeowner's Insurance archived

Has anyone switched to GEICO for their homeowner's insurance? My Travelers policy is up for renewal and I called GEICO just to get a competitive quote and it was more than $1,000 cheaper. I'm wondering if there is something I am missing.

NOTE: I currently insure my car with GEICO so am familiar with the pros and cons in that area; I really want to hear from anyone who is using them -- or considered them -- for their home. Thanks.
I have them for auto, home, and umbrella. My homeowner's policy is not actually a GEICO policy - they are the agent on it. I forget who the actual insurer is. Haven't had a real problem with GEICO, but of course I haven't filed a claim. They did screw up and send the bill to my lender, who was not escrowing, and then threatened to cancel policy when I didn't pay (the non-existent bill). When it was corrected, I had to force GEICO to notify lender that they screwed up, not me.

Ok, the important question to ask MOL is "Geico acts as an agent for this company for homeowners insurance (...................name here). What do you think?"

You purchased your Travelers insurance through an agent and, good for you, know what company is actually issuing the coverage. Too many people think that if they go to XYZ agency and buy insurance and believe it is XYZ insurance. Wrong, it may be Travelers or some fly by night outfit that will not give you good service when you need it. (Travelers should).

I don't think that Geico would represent a truly lousy homeowners company, but..........

A difference of a thousand dollars is significant. You should also feel comfortable that you are getting the scope of coverage you want and need. Are the deductibles the same?

Krnl is correct. You need to look at all the coverages...and limits, even in the fine print. Each insurer covers stuff differently and potentially has very different limits for stuff. For example, one insurer may limit sump pump damage to $5k, while another may have a $20K limit. Yes, it can vary that greatly just in the base policy. Add in that you have an older home, and your needs can be dramatically different. You need an insurer that does well in this market. I would call a reputable broker who is experienced in homeowners with older homes and who has relationships with all the top companies. Warren G. Reiner in Springfield is great and so is Raritan Valley Insurance Services. Ask for Jarrett.

Good luck!
